I am changing the valve cover gasket on my 6080 and noticed the previous owner had oversized nuts as spacers over the shoulders of the bolts.  The parts book appears to show a stack of flat washers as spacers.  What is the reason for this and is there anything special about them.  Can I use ordinary flat washers instead?

They have to have the correct number of spring washers or it will tighten down too tight or too loose. If I remember correctly it is seven spring washers.                 MACK

It should be a shouder
bolt so it wont tighten too tight. Ive never seen one leak with that shoulder bolt and spring washer kit

They are NOT flat washers.They are kinda "w" shaped. I was thinking they face each other every other one. It's what's on 8000 series 426's.

They were shaped like a disc blade. Every other one was stacked and it was like a spring.

They sound like 'bellevill' (sp) washers, which are a form of spring.

Bellville washers. Seven of them taped together to make them as one. Trouble is with time and heat the tape deteriorates and then you have seven individual parts laying in a pile.

Sooo....positioning is...with bolt in position, bottom one facing down against cover then next pair facing each other then repeat again for the 2 pair left? Only trying logic. How'd I do?

I'd say because the washer setup would last longer....My 220 just has Phillips head screws through the gasket. Old school it is but has never been a problem in over 30 yrs.
