Can't help but neighbor had a late 4020 and bought a new 4230, 4020 took half the fuel and did the same work, just not as nice to drive.

prolly something wrong with it. sounds like it needs a tune-up. pump, injectors and valve adjust. The 2 tractors are similar in many aspects, 404cid jd, 407 ih, roosa pumps, dm on jd, db on ih, jd 100 rated hp, 806 95rated. Does either one have an added turbo? both are good tractors, and should be reasonably efficient, but a 190XT/200 will do more work on even less fuel.

Neighbor runs a 4030 and also complains about it's thirst for fuel. Nature of the beast I guess! Haven't been able to convince him to buy ACs yet...

boscoe I don't think you can contribute to this discussion seeing you don't have a diesel tractor.

CLean or replace the air filter, tune up (pump & injectors) & oil change. What are the rear tires like? Switch to radials on the rear. How is it weighted? Trade up.

a 4230 is verry good at turning fuel into heat and noise, that's what they are known for.
I should not post that, but it's true. Just about all my tractors that do the work are JD, but there's no love here for a 4230, I grew up driveing one.

Depends on how much you can afford and what your taste are. 4430 if you have to have green or save a bundle and get something like a 7045 or for about the same as the 4430 get an 8030 instead and get a much better tractor.
