Anyone know how they are getting along with the repairs to this big old gal??? I would like to visit the shops and see "the work in progress". Maybe next summer.

I talked to one of the guys working on the Big Boy, Austin Barker, at our local tractor show last month. His family has four steam tractors and unfortunately he owns a couple green and yellow things too. Still a good guy, anyway, he says they have a lot of work to do but are moving forward fairly quickly. They spent most of the summer putting new plumbing in the frame where, once the boiler is covered, everything is inaccessible. They have new parts all over the shop and this fall will be getting the drive system back together. The new tubes are in the boiler and it is about finished. They hope to have it running in early 2019 but it won't be finished for a couple more months after that. They have some dates to make next summer so there is pressure to get it done on time.

We saw one of the Big Boys at the railroad museum in Scranton, Pa. several years ago, not running of course. Quite a massive piece of machinery. Seems like the info. said the engine weighed almost 400 tons with out the tender and over a million pounds with the tender. Sure would be impressive to see one running.

There is one in the Henry Ford museum , the firebox is auger fed as they couldn't shovel it in fast enough. Suppposedly , it could pull a loaded 100 car coal train uphill at over 60 mph. Very Impressive !
