hey guys i need some scratching done here at the place,,,was thinking about renting a small excavator 

BUT i got to thinkin,,,,dangerous i know but i was,,,,just sitting by the fire drinkin coffee and a light bub came on ever so dimmm

so have any of you guy ever had or used a 3 point back hoe attachment???? any good????

i have a 170 and i was kinda thinkin maybe one of those things might work for me,,,wouldnt be used much but around here it sure would beat the heck out of a shovel and a pick,,,,,,and maybe if i had one sitting around i would or could find more things to do with it,,,,the ones i have looked at were self contained,,,i am guessing a small PTO to the pump ,,,,so no tractor hydro is needed

one i been looking at is from a dealer in tenn. new unit,,8-9 ft reach,,,pretty good reviews,,,bought $4300 shipped,,,,can get orange,,,green or black,,,kinda like the orange ,,,lol

but then i think ,,,heck i can do a lot of renting for the money and not have to have it sitting around

SO,,,,,what you all think of these 3 point units???? any good??? worth the money??

I think the 3 point unit is better than a shovel and pick........... other than that, we bought an old backhoe (Case 530) and restored it....... if you need one seldom, then daily rental might be cheap.

I'm thinking it'd be 'challenging' to get on and off.... and will the 170 hydraulics have enough flow and correct pressure? You might see about a 2 wheel drive 'used/abused' backhoe. 2wd are cheap as everyone 'needs' a 4wd hoe ! Do you have a LEVEL indoor pad to 'drop' off the hoe when not in use. Level is  must,so is indoors(rain/sun will'attack' a hoe...)
Now I did buy the Kubota BX23s in May, GREAT toy to have, near perfect for me and well, I don't like shovels anymore either. I thought about the renting idea BUT then you're commited to doing the job NOW ( time IS money). I like the freedom to do a job when I feel like doing it.

Problem I have seen on a 3pt mount is they move around A LOT, nothing hard fixed in place, hard on the swing arms and such then usually the tractor is a taste light to hold in place as one muscles the bucket in. Think JD or Kubota garden tractor Backhoes, ground very hard NOT digging so good. Better off with a rental or buying an old true TLB to use as needed.

I rented a nice excavator for 3 days to do septic work. Got that done, tore out some thorn trees and some additional clearing. Nephew works at the place so I got a deal for $350 including haul trailer. Would have been $700 otherwise.....Iā€™d gladly pay the full amount given the work I got done. So I think pre-plan your work, schedule the rental and get to it!

I bought a Long 3 point hoe at an auction for $700.  I started cleaning out my pond but the hydraulics couldn't pick it up, so I just pushed myself along with it.  The tractor hydraulics worked just fine for the hoe operation.   I have since gotten a D17 to use it on.  I'm hoping it can lift it, haven't tried it yet.  My thought was that when I get done I can sell it and even if I don't get what I paid for it, the small difference should be a lot less than what it would of cost to rent or hire it done.

 When I was still workin,,the Super bought a JD Skid Steer Loader with a backhoe attachment. The backhoe was a friggin joke as like ole DMiller says they do move around a lot and consequently reduce it's ability to do serious work. The mounts are designed for easy "On and OFF" and that is where the problems are. We wound up welding several 2"X1/2"  straps all over it tryin to stiffen it up,,,,company finally gave up and bought a real backhoe.

Scotts got the right idea.. rent one but plan  way ahead, #1 ..be sure to TURN OFF THE PHONE the minute you pickup the hoe ! Otherwise EVERY second you're on it, you're costing yourself time AND money !! If you're renting for '24hrs' be sure you can do a job or two after the sun goes down. Most citybots will quit for dinner(5PM) and never go back out...
I do like the freedom of' lil TOOT' but it's taken up the indoor parking spot the A-C forklift had. Now it's in one of the 9by12 D-14 sheds,Reminds me I need to add tarps to keep snow out, sigh. nuther job...

Several years ago I bought the hoe off a junked IH loader backhoe tractor for $200   I then mounted it on the back of an old truck frame then cut the frame off behind the cab and put a hitch and a pump with a PTO shaft.  Any tractor with 540 pto will run it but shoud be at least 6k to handle the weight.  It is a clumsy outfit as far as manuvering in tight quarters but for me has worked out great.  It will dig 10 feet deep, mostly all I've used it for is removing stumps and rocks, last summer I dug in a water line for the neighbor and went the full depth. Transport would be a problem if not within driving distance for the tractor.

i think this time ima gona rent the small excavator,,,get it for 24 hrs for $200,,,,and i have been thinking on what i can do other than this creek culvert job i got to do,,,,i know there are other things i need to do but for right now they aint hittin me in the side of the head,,,,i know when i get it loaded up and driving down the road the lights will come on,,,,,dang i shoulda dug that hole or took out that big rock or,,,,well i know its gona happen like that

this creek job isnt a deep dig,,,,only about 2' maybe,,,i was thinkin on maybe to get one of these hoes for the future,,,,i know in the next couple years i will need to dig a hole for this old horse,,,but i could rent for that too

this particular unit i am looking at is self contained,,,it dose not use any tractor hydraulics,,,it has its own pump and reservoir,,, i kinda liked that,,,,dont have to worry about mixing fluids

i dont think the 170 would have any trouble picking one of these things up,,,it handles 1500lb round bales on a spike just fine

i  guess MY biggest fear would be the thing swinging back and forth against the arm stops ,,,,so if i did or do this i would want to figure out how to tie it off so it dont swing back and forth,,,,and i have a place to put one in the barn on a level spot out of the sun and weather,,,i dont keep anything out in the weather,,,,my grand father told me one time,,,,,way back in the OLD days,,,if you have equipment it needs to have a roof over it,,,,and i heard him load and clear,,,and i have always tried to follow his lead,,,,when i first bought this place my truck sat out side for a year,,,,,it was killing me,,,lol,,,,but i fixed that and made a lot of roof space when i did,,,lol

I've used one once many years ago. If I had never used a real back hoe I'd have thought it was great it was better than a shovel but a back hoe it wasn't. Not nearly enough wieght and wobbled around. We have a backhoe at the farm you could rent one many times for just the price of parts we've put in it. Used back hoes will always need something. The are a highly stressed unit. The little jD weighs in at 25000 lbs and I wish it was bigger and much heavier.

$200. to rent for a day.......... $3000. to buy a hoe........... that's a lot of RENTALS to break even and you don't have to do the maintenance.

Have a friend that was given a 3 point backhoe and he finally replaced all the hoses as every time he used it one would blow. Then he decided that his tractor was too small so the next year he traded for a larger tractor. That free stuff is seldom free. šŸ˜†   I do suspect that if you do buy one, you will find all kinds of projects to use it on
