Seems to me people confuse the oil cooler and innercooler terms. BTW, nice work saving the ole iron! A 130 flywheel hp 301 should be fine and efficient for what you're doing.

I wondered about that. But I'm no expert on that and didn't question it. So it must have a different engine in it. It's the same setup as my bothers 7020 but it's orange so I'm guessing it's out of another combine.

1980 and up combines are black engines, not orange.  Don't think you'll ever find a 301 with an intercooler on an orange engine unless someone added it in the field.

That's neat to know that. Some one must have really cared for their L. The paint on the engine is exceptional even for a combine. And the intercooler is stamped with allis chalmers Im going to get some serial numbers when go up and see what i find out. Now you've got me curious what I stumbled across. It would be ironic if it was 7020 engine right after I try to build one. Don't get me started if it runs good. like I said I'm no expert on when they offered what where. Did the straight Ls have the bigger oil cooler?

There is a big difference from a 1972 "L" versus a 1976 "L".   I never saw a 76 "L" that wasn't a hydro which meant it had a 426 engine. I can imagine a 76 "L" having a 7010 style engine oil cooler with a DM-4 injection pump but no intercooler. It would have been rated at 130 flywheel HP configured like that. Your "stamped Allis-Chalmers" was on many regular intake manifolds, not just the intercooler type. The only way it can be intercooled and painted orange is if someone added it on.

I think there was a 145 hp option for the M2 and possibly the straight L that may have been the 301 turboed and intercooled version. Maybe
