    Posted: 26 Jan 2011 at 7:29pm

Just wondering if my timing could be off a little or what? I put new injectors and rebuilt pump on and lined up the timing marks but when you start it allit it does is slobber and gag and smoke like a freight train until you give it a shot of ether then it runs smooth. The shop is about 50 degrees over night. Is this normal or what should shoulI do? Thanks,

where did you have the engine set at when lining up pump marks? Should have been set at 24 degrees if memory serves me correctly. Is this all stock components?

Hey Ed, Guess I never looked I just lined up the marks when I took it off and then put it back on the same way. I think they are stock, I took it to the local diesel shop and he redone it. thanks

re-check it. I bet it is retarded. How did it run before you pulled the pump?

I just bought the tractor and had to break the glass ball when I got to the field then it ran alright but little under powered. Now it pulls like my old 210 that was set at 180 hp, but it doesn't start like the 210 did and it don't smoke much when your pulling hard either.

The timing is listed differently in service manuals and operators manuals. The service man I talked to about it said it made a difference which pump you have and if it has internal advance. I was really confused, too. Might check with a pump shop or an experienced AC mechanic.
If it weren't for the last minute, I wouldn't get anything done!

Don't they have the rubber damper with the timing marks on the "moveable" ring.If so,could be off and read like correct.

Remember, you have to have play out of gears when setting timing.

timing mark in pump doesn't move. The engine timing spec is 24 degrees. Take pump window off, turn engine by hand normal direction (clockwise from front) till lines in pump line up, then look at damper. if off, turn engine to the 24 mark, then rotate pump to realign its marks. All 210/220's came with pumps with 6* advance, the D21's were the ones without advance. there were some pump changes early on that affect internal mark in the pump, but still gets put on engine at 24*. good luck, Ed.

Souinds about normal starting for one with compression down a little.  I dont know if your starting it at half throttle, full throttle or above idle.  If you start at above half throttle they will blubber for awhile until you pull the throttle back down close to idle.   Id still check the timing just of peace of mind.  Good luck

Thanks alot guys, I'll pull the cover off and see what I can find. It doesn't matter if your full throttle, half or idle still does the same.

The rubber looks like it is deteriating on our 220 balancer so I often wonder about it and the timing marks. Are there referance marks on the inner hub or any other way to tell if the outer ring is slipping?

Don't know Butch but doubt it.Check to see if your pully seems to run true.If it wobbles I would be suspect. If you start going through alternators  or fan belts, better replace it.Skip or DRallis might know about the reference marks.

I dont know bout a 220, but some of the 7000 series have small cutout in the outer and inner rings to serve as index marks, you almost have to know they are there to find them.  I would say that if they are using the front pulley for timing and it has the rubber dampner, then it should have the index marks.  HTH
