GM's Going To Four Cylinders In Full-Size Pickups As Fuel Economy War Ramps Up America’s unending love for pickups is still happening despite the impending doom of higher gas prices, so General Motors has been working on some clever tricks to keep their pickups as efficient as possible. Automotive News writes: General Motors is doubling the number of engines available in the redesigned 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups, including the addition of a new four-cylinder turbocharged engine that can run on two cylinders to increase fuel economy. The 2.7-liter I-4 turbo engine is a major milestone for the company. It is the first modern-day four-cylinder engine in a full-size pickup and the industry’s first pickup capable of running on two cylinders. The engine, GM believes, will help it lead in fuel efficiency against Ford’s aluminum-bodied F-150 with V-6 Ecoboost engines and a redesigned Ram 1500 with a mild hybrid system.
That trick 2.7-liter turbocharged inline four with cylinder deactivation tech is the first four-banger for the Chevrolet Silverado line, the Detroit Free Press notes. It will become the standard engine for some popular Silverado trims, including the LT and RST, and packs 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque.

hmm..cylinder deactivation... my 20 year old F-150 4.6 has that, has had for ,um, 20 YEARS... so nothing new.. notice they don't say HP or tork for them 2 cylinders...so do NOT expect to put ANYTHING even a passenger in the PU and get good MPG... Frankly anyone THINKING they're going to get good MPG in a REAL pickup is dreaming. You have to burn a lot of fuel to haul them full loads of rocks and pull big a$$ boats 'as seen on TV'. I KNOW the SSON's ecodiesel Dodge is LOUSY pulling a loaded 20" enclosed cause he don't brag about it anymore....hehehe

I once did a very quick tuneup on my 67 stang...we tore off to the wobblypop store ran smooth but she lacked power. Got home and ,um, saw I'd left off the entire right bank of plug wires...... ..then I got thinking about how someone made a big air compresor out of a V8... Jay

I don't think that these engineers can see the forest through the trees. It's going to take X amount of energy to move something from point A to point B. Four, or two cylinders, is just going to slow the trip up a bit. Darrel

Demand or Government Regulation is causing the technology for these pickups to be built. Why some people will by them for I do not know! Maybe they feel like hauling Sail Boat Fuel so that they can be Eco Friendly. A pickup is a multi purpose vehicle and I have heard many people myself included complain when one performs poorly in a certain job situation.All I have ever owned was Chevrolet,GMC or Ford. And I ran them until they had terminal road cancer. They all gave good service some better than others. Two of the best were GMC's one a 1978 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 350 motor and 456 gears could pull stumps out. The truck I drive now is a 2002 GMC 4x4 with the 6.0 liter. This truck has as much pulling power as my F350 Ford with 460 motor. The F350 was a good truck just you had to put it in 4 wheel drive to move on wet grass no matter what tires I tried. I figured all the weight was in the front.I have looked at new pickups and no matter the manufacturer they all look cheaply built with no metal with any thickness,mostly plastic and a price that farms could be bought for not that many years ago!

YEP.......... lets say it takes 75 HP to move a 5000# vehicle down the road at 65 MPH.. Put a 5000% trailer on the back and it takes maybe 150 HP to maintain that speed... Now if you have a 4 banger that puts out 76 HP at 65 MPH ( or 2000 rpm), then you will barely be able to maintain speed, but get good milage doing it.......... If you have a v8 that puts out 200 HP at 2000 rpm, then you are wasting 124 HP CONSTANTLY when your traveling at 65 mph, but when you come to a hill or want to accelerate, you have the immediate HP to do it. That's the idea with a 4 banger cutting off 2 cylinders.. Barely enough HP to maintain speed on the highway, and the other two cylinders jump in as soon as you touch the throttle.... then the TURBO comes on for max HP ........... will be interesting, but im guessing a 2.7 motor is a little SMALL for a pickup... a lot of cut in/ cut out and turbo will be involved to keep it going..... and YEA, when your pulling that trailer, all 4 cylinders and the turbo will be screaming and the MPG is out the window.

GMs behind in the race and behind the Eight Ball again. They would not invest in the US factories so the market became more limited, they have not lightened the trucks with aluminum EXCEPT the hoods, have made few great strides save OnStar in the last twenty years. I hate cycling cylinders off and on, hard on the heads as they get cool between hot cylinders, had lead to cracks in the old Cadillacs with that system. Ford did get smart, aluminum alloy dropped chassis weight by almost 1000#, less dead weight higher mileage.
Now to just be rid of Corn gas!!

Why not go to a 4 or even 3 cylinder diesel for fuel economy. I’ve always and always will drive Chevrolet, but don’t have a 1/2 ton. Wonder what they think of my 13,000lb service truck with a 8.1 gas.

There is an old saying "No Replacement for Cylinder Displacement"! The size motor is matched for the work you want it to perform. A 4 banger would have to be 500 cu. in. to perform some of the jobs my pickups do. Like I said if all anyone wants to haul or pull is Air then go for it!

Some of these comments are down right funny. You all should look at those output specs before you talk about " no replacement for displacement" or " hauling air" I don't see this 4 cylinder holding a candle to the Ecoboost. My 3.5 Ecoboost gets 23 MPG empty with so much power and torque to spare it will blow your mind then when I hitch up the load I can pull away from the big blocks and beat their fuel millage. Got 11 MPG with the 29' trailer last month and pulled the mountains like a big dog. With that said GM's 4 cylinder putting out 310 HP is nothing to sneeze at. The only down side I see here is the potential high cost of repair and service. but you diesel guys are use to that.

Use t obe a pickup was a work vehicle - only driven by lowly class working guy who drove it himself - no family hauler or 4 door rear seat vehicle - then things changed and now a YUPPIE Hauler - no truck , no work vehicle - a status thing . One looks around now and you see more Pickups, SUV , compact SUV and few actual cars but these OTHER things , and then PREUS and the drivers who point their nose up as they drive by . Seems a Olds station wagon the other day one with that clamshell rear door - a real land boat but it had a purpose in it's time - family hauling grocery getter and vacation hauler for a family And all them FERD guys - remember Caddy has the 8/6/4 engine - back when FURD was still recovering from last mistake . Oh well them FINS on that 57 Chev - will never sell and GM will lose millions by putting fin tale on their cars .

The ecoboost may be a stout engine. I wouldn’t know, but a 3.5 liter v6 sipping gasoline can in no way keep up with a big block and do the same work. If it could they would have to be putting at least a 5r110 transmission behind it. The little 4cyl. gassers may work in the 1/2ton lawnmower hauling trucks. My 8.1 gets 6mpg moving 29,000lbs around.

I think you kinda missed the point, You are comparing apples to oranges. I have no need to haul 29000 but I like the fact that I can tow 10000 from time to time and not have to have a second vehicle to get around in with out killing the fuel budget. But since you brought it up 6 MPG moving 29000 Semis get 6 MPG moving 60000 ? I wouldn't brag about that.

I agree with Dave63 I to have a 3.5 eco-boost 2017 with max tow I pull a 27.5 foot 5th wheel camper with no trouble running empty I get 22-23 miles to a gallon lariat package rides like a dream so yah I read and smile . Shameless its good cheby is still running may be some day they will catch up. Randy

I have a 2002 F150 with a 5.4 V8 ........... looking at something new sometime.. New options are the 5.0 V8 and the 3.5 V6 TURBO .......... I assumed I would go with the newer 5.0 V8 since it has about same HP than my older 5.4 ........... Talked to a couple FORD guys and they said same as Dave .......... the 3.5 with the TURBO has a LOT of extra HP and its setup to putout at 2000 RPM, not 5000 as you would expect....... The 3.5 TURBO has the HP to run away from the 5.0 and 6.2 motors ......... hard to believe, but it is designed RIGHT ...................... now I see the "plan" with going to a 2.7 4 banger , but I just have a little trouble accepting that !
and my old 2002 with the V8 is rated about 10K trailer .... I think the new V6 TURBO was 13K ?

Here is a FORD TORQUE Curve for their motors... Note that the only one with a TURBO is the 3.5 V6 ........ at the bottom you see the 3.7 motor.. near the top the "BIGGER V8" are the 5.4 and 6.2 .( orange and purple)......... note that the TURBO 3.5 (light blue) out does them with LOW END TORQUE in the 2000 - 4000 RPM range .......... impressive.

We each have our own requirements in a Pickup. I could not use a F150 no matter if it had 1,000 ft. lbs. of torque ! Just not heavy enough GVW for what I do. I know of a local Farmer that towed a goose neck trailer in the spring planting season with seed and fertilizer loaded to the max and the truck was looking like an old tail dragger airplane taxing for take off ! Did the truck pull the trailer ? Yes it pulled it and a 3/4 or 1 ton would have pulled it better !
