...saw the post below - was the heritage of the engine such that there were adjustments under there as in an earlier version  'Leroi' possibly ?  Or was it just a 'thing' they did back then?  Flat heat engines were like this...  just a thought... any ideas ?

I always thought A-C hadn't finely honed their casting skills until the WD45 engine block!! But, there's something to be said for being able to clean the sludge out of that area, as they were using non-detergent oils from the WC (1934) thru the WD (1953).

Chev 250 inline 6 cyl had side cover as well. Sure made it easy to change bad lifter. I had one in a 71 Ventura (like Nova). Drove from North of Toronto here to Los Angeles. One lifter was clacking badly when we got there. Removed rocker cover and side cover. Installed one new lifter and drove the car for years after. Took maybe 1/2 hr to do. Sure had some comments about backwoods Canucks doing repairs in driveways!
Cost of repair was less than $20. Smile

Ford Sixes have that lifter cover too, definitely a troublesome spot for oil leakage.
