I had to do a service call today. Customer said vehicle wouldnt start.
Got to the customer and found battery junk. Lucky I brought that with. But further investigation showed some very strange goings on. I found the radio and dash are delayed when you turn the key to run. Almost like the truck is thinking before it turns it on. Second is the windows do not work at all. Third is the park reverse nuetral indicator does not have a line under the current selection and the park shift lock is not working. It seems to me I've stumbled upon this in the past but for the life of me I can't remember where I read up on it. Am I looking at a transmission computer, key switch, etc. I told.the customer I need to study up on this and come back. They were fine with that. What path do you guys suggest I take. |

1 ) corroded +12 from starter to truck fuse panel ? if the battery goes to starter THEN up to fusel panel (well chevvies used to...), a badly corroded 'feed' wire would/could 'delay' the voltage getting to the switch and things. if it started up fine, that'd mean the battery to starter wire is ok. 2) the other possibilty is the actual ignition switch.worn out..very little copper left to get electrons where they're needed.Probably used a zillion times, EOL ( End Of Life) My gut says #2

If it had a dead battery, the computer probably needed to reset itself. May take a few drive cycles to get things back in order. The park/neutral switch may be going out. A separate issue.
As for the windows, that's may also be a separate issue; could be any number of things. To get to the bottom of all this, I agree with the need to plug in a good scanner and see what is/isn't happening. |

I had a 2004 2500HD that acted very close to this, they went through the electrical to a common point of the ignition switch,
noted fails I can remember- A/C check engine power windows plus others but bottom line was ignition switch fix. I've slept since then

Thank you guys for your thoughts. This is the new body style Chevy 1500.
So it's a bit more complex then the 03-06 classic style but not too much. I'll have to get it down to the shop to really dig into it. Someone mentioned it will need a few drive cycles. It won't even crank let alone drive. I did forget to mention earlier, I noticed there was no indication telling me what gear I was in. Well I forgot to tell you guys that the park lock doesn't work either. I frankly think this vehicle is thinking it's in gear keeping me from starting it. Who's in charge of gear selection? Is there a range switch or is it all done through the transmission computer? |

BCM
Do the brake lights work? Is the pass lock kicking in (anti theft light) with the key on? Your going to have to watch the scanner data to see what's working and what isn't. My opinion.

With no PRNDL, almost certainly the TCM is off line. It will not crank until the TCM reports either Park or Neutral. With other things not working, there’s a chance that the high speed network is down. Disconnect the battery and put your ohmmeter across pins 6 and 14. Should read 60 ohms. 120 ohms means there is a break on one leg, infinite resistance both legs are open.
