    Posted: 13 May 2010 at 8:01pm
Hello,
I just got my first crawler (a HD 5) home a couple nights ago and it was missing. Long story short, the motor was full of antifreeze. The head is warped, the cam is shot, and the crank will need to be repaired. Does anyone have a used motor for sale or the above parts?  Engine SN is 271 11428 and the crank is stamped R020  M020  Any suggestions? Cut my losses and scrap it? All I heard before I got this HD was how great the 2 71 detroit is. I'm a diesel mechanic by trade and I have never seen a motor in this bad of shape. This sucks.
Thanks for any help in advance,
Matt  cell 218-779-1206

2-71 should be easy rebuild , all parts are std between all lines of 71 series.
I have a spare engine but has a bad crank and ? as it came with a parts machine i bought.
Loaded head , rebuilt should be around $500, crank can go .030 under.  Sleeves and pistons unsure now I paid $70 each, gasket kid was cheapest from Interstate Detroit Diesel , like $30 where NAPA wanted over $125 for same kit. Injectors are HV7
Might look for generator set as these engines were used by RR on refrigerated cars at one time , there also 2-53 was used also.
I found blower parts from outfit in Duluth MN for another engine where blower had filled with water and froze breaking one lobe, they sold me the one i needed. Know they had a large inventory of parts for 2-71
Can't find their name right now but will see if i can .

Hey thanks for the quick reply. Just checking the net for some more prices now. I also need a few other parts like a radiator, floor plate, pads, bolts for the pads (a lot of them) cylinder rebuild kits (it's a HD-5G 1947) Can I still buy a new radiator?

I found a good used one , have a old one but rough, unsure if you can buy a core or not.
Cylinder kits are out there , ram packing is v ring and can be bought at hyd shop or through Mcmaster Carr.
Track bolts are something any track shop can get , or crawler dealer.
Sweeney Brothers were a Fiat Alis dealer ( AC )in the Dakotas, also a few people on here that have parts , look through posts on crawlers to find names.

I have an HD7. The 3-71 was bad, not rebuildable. I put a 4-53 in it. I have gotten good use out of it and abused it, bad, for 20 some years. Maybe a 3-53 would be a good fix for yours. The Govt was getting rid of 3-53's awhile back. Finding parts for the low block 71 won't be easy.

Would a 3 53 fit or would I have to move the radiator and front end out? I had a G series and there isnt much room to go out before the loader wont clear.

The 2-71 should not be that expensive to rebuild. When i rebuilt mine it was $2500.00 to go through the engine. I had to install a new oil pump which wasn't cheap and put a blower rebuild kit in it which is $400.00 alone.I got all the parts right from detroit.  I took the radiator to  a local radaitor shop and had it recored. It was $600.00 but still better and cheaper than wrecking a new engine. The head may be fixable if it can be plained. A cam and crank should be rather easy to find since many 2-71 gen sets were built. Try Kugler Salvage in Erhard,MN at 1-800-874-2130 I was told that they have lots of parts for construction equipment.

Gemdozer do you have a good used crank, cam, radiator and head? If so how much?
Matt I just cant afford a $2500.00 rebuild I only have $2000.00 into the dozer as it sits. I left Kugler a message so I hope to hear back from him. Thanks to everyone for the help.

The sleeves on these engines need to be a snug slip fit for heat exchange to the block, if not the pistons can seize or tear a sleeve in two at the air box ports.  The kit sleeves will be a specific size so you will need to mic them to get the correct diameter.  If a new sleeve aligns and drops in place with little to no resistance it will not last long.

If the engine was full of coolant and the head was the culprit it won't be too much issue, these engines also had zinc 'pencils' installed in the water pump housing to control electrolysis, if the block is ate up due to these being 'forgotten' in the water jacket you can get coolant flow between the sleeves and block bores, there is no fix for that except a block.   Putting coolant or water with alcohol init in the water jacket with the sleeves pulled can show if there are electrolysis burn through areas before you spend a bunch of cash on hard parts.
