Probably did like JD does, outsource. Waterloo castings makes quite a few parts for JD. Briggs and Stratton does too.

They aready had gone overseas with some casting,  I know Deere at Waterloo had a state of the art foundry at the time and AC bought from them too.   200 tractors which were produced long before the foundry closing had cylinder heads that were cast in France and the cranks had Japan cast in them.

Some 185 blocks were cast in France.  Some 3pt castings have the "FM" logo of Fairbanks-Morse.
The innovators offer what others will imitate.

Interesting.  So, it must have been cheaper for them to outsource & ship verses build at home?  Where was Fairbanks - Morse located?

The eighties were rough on heavy industry, the administration in Washington gave teeth to the EPA in order to create revenue, and instead, it drove many foundries and drop forges out of business, along with the fact that part of the Reaganomics package subsidized overseas production of castings and forgings to help the bottom line of Automotive, Agriculture, and Appliance companies, at the expense of smaller suppliers.
