Low on compression last fall when I bought her. #2@65psi, #3@45psi. Front and back cylenders were around 115 and this tractor hadn’t run in years. Here’s what I found so far this morning.
Someone drilled between 2&3 and installed a plug. The head gasket has a hole right above plug. What should I do next please? Thanks. Dana Edited by captaindana - 13 Oct 2023 at 7:53pm |

Oh and when I preformed the leak down compression check those two cylinders bubbled in the radiator.

Normally your looking for a HAIR LINE crack that MIGHT catch your finger nail when you run across it.... a few thousands wide.. Thats about 10 TIMES that size.. I wonder if the crack was that big, or they pounded the plug in there and spread it...??
Most would say the block is toast...... About 15 years ago, Dick L had a post where he went thru the freeze plug on the side of the block and drilled thru the block on the opposite side, threaded it, installed a bolt all the way across and pulled it back to a hair line crack.. Left the bolt in permanently.... The gasket will seal a crack 5 thousandths wide.. not 1/16 - 1/8 of an inch.

I looked at Dicks site and dont see a photo of his work. I did find this block photo from Dick... I drew an arrow on the side where the freeze plug is located.. I seem to remember he took this plug out and went from there.

Heads gasket was leaking across fire rings.Make sure sleeves are protruding correctly. Probably just clean up block and head, new gasket should fix it. If you want you could put sealer in crack , let it cure before replacing head and gasket. JMHO, Tracy

He has a water leak into the combustion chamber also... Antifreeze is coming up thru the crack ( or combustion is actually going down the crack into the water jacket.

The plug doesn’t make sense to me why it was placed. I know of folks drilling a hole to stop a crack but that is an extremely big plug to do that if that’s why it was done.

So what about dropping in a good running 139 or 149 CI engine? Would they fit no problem? Will my carb and air cleaner work on either engine? This CA is pretty much mint (except for the boat anchor engine) 😫newer radiator, gas tank from last winter, woods l306, rebuilt carb, etc. Thanks for any inputs! Dana

I put a 138 in a CA. It was a direct bolt in. I had to build a bracket for the air cleaner and rig up a temp gouge. Holes in the hood all lined up. The 149 manifold will not line up with the holes in the hood.

For only the cost of a head gasket I'd spread JB Weld over the crack and between the cylinders and bolt the head down tight while the JB is still pliable.Let it set for 2 days before cranking.
