I just bought a Series III 190XT. The previous owner was running it when it suddenly stopped. He diagnosed it as the injection pump, pulled the pump, had it rebuilt, and re-installed it. He couldn't get it started. So it sat in his barn for several years. I'm thinking that he didn't set the timing correctly when installing the pump. 

Because I'm pretty sure he didn't pull the front of the engine to pull the gear off the pump, I think he pulled the shaft out of the pump and left it on the tractor during the rebuild. I've looked through the inspection plate and determined that it is definitely out of time. 

My question is, how should I go about fixing this issue? I'm mechanically inclined, but not familiar with these setups at all. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

if the shaft wasnt removed from the gear then all you should need to do is align the timing marks @ 26degrees BTC ,#1 compression, on front cover with pulley and then loosen pump bolts and line up marks inside the pump. timing pointer is visible on RH side of engine looking past pump gear cover at crank pulley

You prolly want to start all over from what he started ; best way is to take the injector pump drive gear out , find your timing marks on the crank pully ,26 , i always pull the number 1 injector and stick a weldin rod in to the top of the piston to make sure its coming to the top on compression , once you are there slide the shaft in the pump making sure the tang dots are aligned right, make sure the marks are close in the pump window    and then reinstall the timing gear and waaalllaaa you got it ; turn the engine over a few rounds and check the timing in the pump window to make sure the lash is accounted for , loosen the fuel lines , get the air out and she,ll fire up , i bought one like this too , outa time , got a very sweet deal , it took me a half hour and had her puuurrrrinnn good !!

Take a very close look at the end of the driveshaft. On one side of the flat tang there is a "dot".....look inside of the pump....in the drive tang socket there is also a "dot". Install the pump "dot" to "dot" with the driveshaft and then fine tune the 26 degrees BTDC.

Thanks guys. All of these comments were helpful. It's making sense as I read this and hopefully it'll still make sense when I get the tractor. I hope to get to it today and will let you know how it goes.
