I noticed a few weeks ago when running my 190 the engine would speed up and slow down. I am thinking it is 'lack of fuel'. I was going to replace the fuel filter and put a electric fuel pump on it.
What do you all think?

You in cold weather? Could be gelling or plugged filters. try that first. My guess would be the inj pump seal is coming apart.

Valve leaving the fuel tank could be partially plugged.

It is a sign of restricted fuel flow or a weak supply pump inside the injector pump.

The rubber seals in the hand primer pump will do it too.

Or the inertial ring in the governor section in the pump is coming apart and the little bits are restricting the return outlet on the pump. You might take the return fitting off the pump and start the engine and watch for little black bits coming out with the fuel. |

You really don't need an electric fuel pump on a 190. The first thing you do is shut off both fuel shutoff valves under the tank, (on top of sediment bowls). Take off sediment bowls, then open the shutoff valves one at a time and see if the fuel flows out freely. If the fuel comes out very slowly or not at all you have a blockage where the fuel comes out of the tank and into the sediment bowl. Open the shutoff valve on the bowl that is restricted and take an air nozzle and blow air in the hole where the fuel should be coming out. You then should have fuel flowing out freely. Look in the tank and check for debris . If the tank has a lot of crud in it you may have to have the tank cleaned out . The next place to look is the fuel filter, lines , return line, then inj. pump.

I vote for the governor ring.If its' been YEARS since pump was down, that's probably it.Do what Brian says and "inspect" return fuel.
