Checked the oil in my 190XT the other day, before some heavy work and found the crankcase completely filled....mostly diesel.  What could cause that???

Most likely it is the umbrella seal on the injection pump shaft. They will get old and rot and diesel fuel from the injection pump can get by the seal and will fill the crankcase.  One other place it can happen on a J.Deere , not sure if XT's have them, is through the  fuel pump that pumps fuel from tank to the injection pump.  The diaphram can rupsure and fuel can get to the crankcase that way also.

Bushing in front of pump most likely has groves worn in it from seals and needs replaced to.  MACK

Ill second the umbrella seals, but it could also be the bushing as Mach Stated.  Might be time for a pump rebuild.

Buy yourself pump rebuild kit. It contains the gaskets you will need to rebuild your pump. Also replace the pilot tube. The pilot tube is held in by epoxy.  After the pump is removed, heat the pilot tube with a heat gun and pull the pilot tube out.  Clean the area thoroughly. Apply epoxy to the exterior grooves of the pilot tube and re-install into the bore. (NOTE: Measure the pilot tube stick out before removing.)
While you have the pump apart, replace the flex ring. 
There is an alternative to the flex ring. Your parts supplier will have a replacement to the flex ring which does not go bad. 
Get a copy or borrow a copy of the pump rebuild manual before you remove or rebuild any portion of the pump.  Follow the instructions and you should do just fine.   Be sure to not the position of ALL parts as you disassemble the pump.

flex ring being broken plugging return is probably what caused the cup seal to start leaking. time for pump service.

Thanks for all the counsel!  I believe I now know where to start.  The pump was just redone so the problem has to be in the re-installation.  Tom

If pump was just rebuilt, then the fuel side cup seal got rolled upon installation,(very common)lot of times when run with a rolled seal, the pilot tube gets ruined.  or epoxy didn't hold and pilot tube spun.
