I know this has been talked about quite a bit, but I'm looking at buying one that I know jumps 4th. I've read that it requires disassembling the rear end, but are the parts all still available? Would it need 3rd and 4th gears, slider, and shift fork or what might be required?

After market parts are available. Got some in my XT. As far as what else is required, you won't know until you tear it down. In all the gear jumpers I've been involved with, sloppy bearings were a good part of the problem. My XT also needed a new input shaft.
I hope you are getting that tractor dirt cheap! You will be looking at $2000 in parts alone for a proper fix. |

Make sure it has the deep shift rail and fork from a very late model 185 and it may fix it without a teardown.

Do you know about what year or when the serial number break was on the 185 shifter?

70261443 is the deeper shift 3 & 4 shift rail.......70261385 is the new fork. You should replace these parts anyway when replacing transmission gears, so why not start there and it might fix it.

Thank you, I will try that first. It didn't seem to jump 3rd but it does 4th. I didn't realize that you could get the shift fork new, I was thinking I would have to find a late 185 parts tractor. When I pull the shift cover off I should be able to see if the cogs are wore on the gears from there right?
