185 fuel gauge

   185 fuel gauge will only read empty. I put in a new sender same thing. Looked at wiring diagram and it is wired right. The purple wire to the sender has 12 volts with key on stud/wire goin to sender ( white with black stripe) has no power to it. 
Made a ground wire from sender body to ground still reads empty. Still reads empty tank is between 3/4 and full. 
Bad gauge? Any ideas?

	Ground the terminal of the gauge the sender wire hooks to and see if the gauge changes. If it doesn't the gauge is bad. If it does, ground the wire coming from the gauge at the sender and see if the gauge moves when powered up. If the gauge moves, with that wire grounded, it is a sending unit problem. If it doesn't move then wire is likely broken, or a bad connection, between the gauge and sender. You likely checked this, but are you sure the sender is the correct ohm range to match the gauge? 	With the key on, connect a jumper wire onto the sender stud. The gauge should read full or past full. When you ground the jumper wire, it should go to "E". If not, a bad gauge. If so, a bad sender. Sometimes the sender needs a ground wire on one of the mounting screws to insure a complete circuit.
