I'm wondering if some of the experts here can set me straight on dipsticks/oil capacities for a 180 gasser. I bought this unit a few years ago for some light haying chores, and it has what I know to be an incorrect dipstick and/or drop tube in it. Someone's hacked off the dipstick because it was far too long, and the only line left on it is about 1/4" from the bottom of the stick - way too low. From what I can gather on the Agco parts website and searching old posts, it seems like (and some of this is guesswork on my part so I may be wrong) the gassers and early diesels had a shallower oil pan than the later diesels. Agco later offered different drop tubes (they call 'extensions') - the piece that fits into the block that the dipstick drops into. These were different heights, to allow the same dipstick to work with the different oil pan depths. The dipsticks are still available, but not the drop tubes for the earlier engines so I can't replace with the correct parts. Whenever I fill/change my oil I've been taking a 'best guess' at what the fill level should be. The manual I have lists 8-12 quart capacity for these engines, and I believe my 180 gasser is at the lower end of this (8 quarts even seems a touch high for what I think it should be). The manual also doesn't list different capacities for earlier/later units nor gassers vs. diesels, so I'm thinking the manual is not the best metric to go by. If anyone knows what the ideal oil capacity is for one of the earlier gasser units, I could fill it appropriately and scribe fill/add lines on my current dipstick. Or if anyone has one of the earlier drop-tubes available (part #74021615) I could use it in conjunction with a new dipstick from Agco. For now, I'm just filling with 8-9 quarts and keeping it topped up to that level on the dipstick. I'd like to have it idiot-proof, however, so it doesn't cause confusion to anyone who I have using it when I'm not around.

For whatever tractor you have the engine oil capacity will be listed in your operators manual in the "capacities" Section. If you don't have an operators manual for you r tractor, You SHOULD have one.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

As per my first post, my manual lists an 8-12 quart capacity which I know to be incorrect (the first time I changed it I tried putting 12 quarts in, and it was so high that it started coming out the dipstick hole). I suspect because I purchased the manual afterwards/online, it's a later printing and applies to the later 180/185 - not the one I have with the early/shallow pan.

I cant help Dan... but you are RIGHT... I have a IT AC202 manual and it covers everything from the 180 up to the 6080 .... and in the 185 section of the book it says 8- 12 quarts for the engine... depending on year and application..

Interesting. My manual doesn't list anything about year/application. I assumed the 8-12 quarts applied only for the later models, and I was guessing that 8 quarts was the 'Add' level on the dipstick while 12 quarts was the 'Full' level. Knowing that your manual says that's the range for different years/applications, I'm guessing if 8 quarts is probably the 'full' level for the earlier style like mine, while 12 is the 'full' level for the later ones. That gets me in in the ballpark anyway - I think I'll put in 8 or 9 quarts and mark that as the nominal level. Thanks!

The funny thing about "with filter change" is the fact that the filter on those engines retains nothing. Overnite they completely drain back to the oil sump.

Thanks most kindly - I guess the 11 quarts or so must be correct. Seems a little high to me, as I know 12 was excessively high. But next time I change it I'll put in 11 and see where she lands.
Thanks again all!

My Publications catalog lists only one "180 operators manual"... "Form TM-458".. I find that is contains both gas and diesel info.. The capacity section gives "9 quarts and 10 quarts with filter.. I am sure that there must be later editions....Dale

The anti-drain back filters I am used to keep the dirty oil from draining back into the oil pump. The clean oil trapped inside a 180 filter slowly (overnite) drains thru the main oil galley into the mains and rods. That's why if you remove the filter after sitting overnite you don't get any oil running down the side frame. The filter is empty. It all went into the engine.

My Operators manual is form TM-458 C, so it may be newer than TM-458. My book has a page 50-A that shows how to change the dual speed PTO from 540 to 1,000 RPM, so maybe my book is a little newer. Anyway, gas engine is 10 quarts and 11 quarts with filter change. The diesel engine is 11 and 12 quarts with filter change.

Tube in my PS 8070 was bent down near vertical inside pan. Drained 2 1/2 Gal out of "full" pan instead of almost 5 gal....ya never know what these used tractors have been through.

exactly Doc. Wonder what they were thinking. 200's and up all had inverted oil filters. One could probably squeeze a half teacup out of an old filter....but not .9 qt. Also who changes oil WITHOUT changing filters? (well most owners with bypass filters did because some didn't even know they were there)

At least the PO of my B used a genuine filter when they changed it, either that or it still has it's factory oil filter installed! Really ought to sort that I suppose!

I've an operator manual that came with an early (AC 180 D under s/n 3000) it says gas engine takes 10 qt oil only or 11 qt with oil & filter change.
A diesel shows 11 qt oil only and 12qt with oil & filter.
My referenced Op Man'l is FORM TM-458C. number on lower RH of the front cover. TM504 is AC185 D printed 1-71. on front of cover #261781 is AC185 D printed April 1980. on rear of cover . Wish they listed the Serial numbers they covered at time of printing. Seems strange that newest OP Man'l for AC185 D calls for less oil in late AC185 D than earlier AC180 D & 185 D. It says 11 qt for oil & filter like a 180 gas. Maybe the late crank mount oil pump engine has a shallower pan? |

Late model/crankshaft driven oil pump holds more oil than the earlier pans. A 200 tractor for example holds 16 quarts with two (non drain back) oil filters. A 185 of that age would then hold probably 13-14 quarts.

Non related story.
Went to check oil on pickup truck. When pulled dipstick out there was oil on it. Wiped off stuck back in nothing. We said oh crap. After putting few quarts in and still nothing we thought something is wrong. The tub had rust hole and when dipstick went back in it went outside of engine. Got new tub and changed oil. But those few moments had us nervous.

Again, not related, but I worked for NYSDOT for 31 years. Some of our older (large dumps) plow truck oil pans would rust out (constantly exposed to salt) when they got older. They would just give out and drop the oil on the road and ruin the engine.
Later trucks were equipped with fiberglass oil pans.
