Which do you guys prefer on 175 gas or diesel. I'm looking at a 1979 model 175 diesel and just wondering how good the perkins engine is. Please give me the good and the bad and if you can please post pictures. Thanks again.

Perkins probably makes one of the best Diesels. At least as good as most Deere, Cummins, or other power plant engine.

I know everyone loves the Perkins, I don't doubt it's good but it's hard to go wrong with a 226 in a tractor of that size.

I own 5 Perkins 236 engines (3 with turbos) and have never had a wrench to any of them.

Can't beat the Perkins....even though I like the 226 gasser, the Perkins wins hands down on torque and fuel economy. I thought my 170 gasser was a money maker until I bought a 175D. I can usually transform a tank of diesel into $1000 mowing weeds with my JD MX8 field mower. ![]() |

Thanks to you guys for your input, I've never had a perkins but I had a 175 gas and I really liked it. Eldon, you wouldn't have a extra grill with all the 175's that you have would you, the one I'm looking at doesn't have one. Thanks again.

I have a fiberglass replacement laying in the shed from the 170D I parted, but I know if I sell it, one will fall off of the other 3 and then I will be in the same boat as a lot of other people LOL! Keeping an eye on Ebay, I see that these grills are made of gold...all due to a pisasspoor latch design.....

Eldon have you ever seen your 170 gas since you sold it? I always thought that tractor could have been made nice with not alot of work.

I got a call last summer from the owner's brother (he was the one I dealt with originally), he was wondering if I had a 7.50 - 16 tire to sell...seems his brother had ruined one and couldn't find a replacement....sorry I couldn't help him. The tractor is about 120 miles west of me....probably doesn't look like this anymore judging by the type of peeple they are LOL.....
