170-175

I have 3-175s, 2-170s and 1 one seventy. 1-175 has a D after serial number, 1-170 has a D after serial number,  one seventy just numbers. tractors are numbered from 1967-1981. just trying to understand the reasoning behind the differences in the number 170 is of course a diesel, all 175s are diesels. what do you think is the differences in the numbering of the tractors

When the 175 came out, as a diesel only, did they quit adding the D to the sn? Then they later introduced the 175 Gas and then had to go back to noting the difference on the sn? Maybe someone has swapped gas to diesel. What I'm getting at is there was a time when only diesel was available, so maybe they didn't see the need to note it's diesel, since that's all there was, during that time frame. Who knows, post up the serial numbers of them all and someone will know if they fall in that window.

The employee operating the serial number stamping machine could tell us, but doubt that he/she is around any more. There was somewhat of a good reason in the case of the D-17, because the gas/LPgas tractors had a longer clutch shaft than the diesels, so it would have been of great importance when assembling to know which torque housing you were working on...gas or diesel.

back ground on one 175 came from tractor jockey 30 years ago. 2 of 175s without came one of my friends when they  settled his estate. his father bought one new, he bought the other one new himself. they are both diesel from day one. I worked for them back in the old days, thinking why couldn't we get a new tractor.
