Spring is a ways off yet, but I've been thinking about getting a 1400 to replace a Great Plains discovator that we can't keep shanks on. Are they a good machine? How heavy are the shanks compared to a modern field cultivator? The trash clearance isn't really an issue, the discovator isn't really good with trash anyways. Just would like some input on them before I go out looking for one.

There are 7 1/2" shank spacing and 9 inch shank spacing. Know what you are buying. Overall a good machine for the early 1980's.

I have a 1400 and really like it. When I bought it most of the shanks were streched so I took them all off and re-arched them in the press using a new one as a guide. I only broke 3 when I was too agressive. All still holding true.
