I have a 1956 Allis Chalmers WD45. does anyone know if you need a regulator and solenoid for a 12 volt system? When i got my tractor it did not run, and the wiring was converted from 6 to 12 volt, and it did not have either of them. |

You don't need a regulator if you have an internal regulated alternator. You don't need a solenoid if you use the original starter and pull switch.

Looks like you have the start of a nice snow plow rig or a light dozer there. Might need to store the hand crank though.

Yep, thats a plow frame on it. The hand crank has been removed. that pic is when i got it so the hand crank is rusted on. I removed it by spraying on a little pb-blaster.

I converted my 56 WD45 to 12volt using a generator (working one was FREE) and bought a D17 voltage regulator. I drilled holes in the front of my battery box and mounted it there. Works great for me. Mike

I have a brand new 6-volt generator i was going to use on it, but you get better cranking in cold weather with 12-volts. going to sell my 6-volt. |

Here's some pics of my 12v conversion. I went generator instead of alternator not only because of having the generator free but also because the 190 picker is going this tractor and an alternator would stick out and not allow mounting of the left engine side shield. Mike

Very nice setup. I might have to try somthing like that because I have a regulator from a D-17. I would only need to get the generator then. |

I have a remanufactured generator that I got from Value-bilt a while back for my D15, but it was too log to fit in front of the carb. Will work fine on the larger WD engine. I'm in Eastern Pa, near Easton. Bob

Oh okay. Different Mark. Mark over on Sid Taylor is a nice fella. He's bought some parts from us for his B model. Thought maybe he bought a 45'. Orange is addicting!
