Hi All:
First, is it customary to report back on posts, and how the tractor functions as a result of this fantastic forum? The 1 of the 3 bolts that holds the pto stub shaft is broken off (looks like it was twisted off by previous owner). How hard is this to fix? Do I have to take the housing apart? I have the manual, and it looks like that is the case. Is there something easier? |

I'm guessing a 6080, from his other posts. What size bolt? You can drill out and use a quality spline type EZ out, or weld a nut to the stub, pictures would help, to see what the situation is.

sseflick, I don't know that it is customary to report back on posts but it is nice. I try to update the status of things when asking for help.

My apologies. I have COVID. It is a 6080.
They are large probably a 3/4. I looked in the parts book, and it looks like I have to take the pto cove off to fix this. |

As in 3/4" bolt, or 3/4" wrench?
You may want to leave the housing in place to serve as a guide to drill a hole in the bolt. Before doing that, Heat it with a torch, as hot as you can get it, and let it cool. These are the type of bolt extractor that seems to work best for me: I have rarely had a bolt bigger than 1/2" shear off unless there's a jerk on the wrench...

If you are talking about the three bolts that hold the short PTO output stub shaft, which can be changed for 540 or 1000 RPM use, those are shown as special bolts. If those are the ones, you are talking about, the nut would be what twisted the thread off. If you look in the parts book it would appear the head is inside and not accessible without disassembly. It appears they have special heads so they don't turn, and the shanks may be an interference fit so they stay in place when the nut is removed to take the stub off. And they are metric. IF I am looking at the right ones, I would not say you need easy outs or heat. I would say they press or drive out and the new ones are installed the same way. My apologies if I am looking at the wrong bolts.
The PTO stub shaft arrangement should be on page 214 of this parts book and the bolts are item 17 and the nuts are 18.

Jim you are exactly correct. That is what I thought I just wanted to confirm.
I believe the whole pto cover has to come off to replace those studs. Is that your understanding? I am thinking about welding a bolt onto the end and using that for now. Is that a crazy idea? I'll take a picture tomorrow, and post here. This is a new to me tractor, and I have been working on it for about 2 months now, and want to get it going. Thanks everybody! |
