Hi, all, thank you for letting me join. I have a hobby of rebuilding old tractors, and that involves heavy tools. So, I bought an Allis forklift. 6-cyl gas motor, runs, drives, but a lil janky. Looks like pics I have seen of fp-40 but not sure. Im attaching some pics.

If it has a 6 cylinder engine it's likely a 60 series rather than 40. Service manuals are hard to come by, a while back a good manual was advertised on Kijiji, it seemed to be a slow sale, I don't see it there anymore. Of course on this forum you can ask specific questions as well and you may get some answers you need. Best wishes on your new toy/tool  ------------- Currently- WD,WC,3WF's,2 D14's B. thank you! -seems to have ridiculously small air cleaner? 2" high 4" circle? for a 6? - two radiators each with separate feed from water pump? one behind driver seat and one at the rear (junkyard replacement with electric fan) - 6 series any idea lift capacity? thank you! |

It sounds like some aftermarket tinkering has taken place, oh well, if it works then very well. If it is a 60 series I would expect it to be about a 6000 lbs. capacity fork lift. There is usually a plate riveted on somewhere that gives measurements and capacities, of course it could be missing with the passage of time. ------------- Currently- WD,WC,3WF's,2 D14's B. i found the playe- fp40 indeed. I hypothesize that the original motor died and they could find the 6 but not the 4, so they put a six in it. doesnt much matter to me. I am bewildered by the two radiators though! |

I drove a mid 50s allis FTP 40 lift truck at work years ago. Looked similar to yours. It had about a turn and a half of play in the steering, fun. 4 cylinder engine, it did run well. ------------- '41 Allis B '49 Farmall Cub |

My guess bigger engine needed more cooling, bigger radiator. Fork lifts being notoriously tight on space, they just added a second where ever they could mount it.

I would THINK that... Swapping in a six from a four (I'm betting they're identical Continental flatheads of just two more cyls) meant the engine cooling radiator needed to be moved to the far side of the counterweight (for clearance)... and the OTHER heat exchanger is an oil cooler... But if it's two rads, they'd be plumbed in series. Sometimes guys have challenges with flatheads and cooling... yeah, they're thermally challenging, because there's a host of thermal design challenges just from the GEOMETRIC standpoint... and a host of other challenges, that when overheating problems start to appear, guys are at a loss, so they do anything they can... crazy things... to try and solve problems. ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest. |

I think they are Budas. If anyone has a line on the side engine panels, please holla. I could use em. If anyone has a hint on fixing the parking brake - holla. I have the manuals but it seems pretty intricate. I got the regular brakes working OK. TRheyll need new shoes though.
