Group! Looking for some advice on diesel fuel additives
I have some older (80's-90's) equipment (tractors, skid steers etc) that get mostly put up for winter in an unheated building.
Last year we had one that when getting it ready in spring started/stalled wouldn't restart and when it finally did, wouldn't rev. After some heat and gentle taps on the IP it came around and has been fine all season. This has never happened in the past 15 years. It was a cold, miserable long winter here in the Northeast We've run some ATF every few fill ups, but is there a good product anyone can suggest to "pickle" these old girls for the winter? Just trying to avoid another spring fiasco because of course, it's always "I needed it yesterday" when it comes time to recommission the stuff for the season Thanks! |

I use Power Service, and usually have at least one tractor that I run through the cold weather. I have got to the point that I decided it is easier to just treat the fuel as we get it delivered instead of worrying about remembering to get everything treated in the fall. If you don't run the equipment when it is cold you shouldn't have to worry about getting it treated properly, but you need to read the label if you plan on using the equipment. There are different levels of treatment for different temperatures, and it is recommended to double the treatment if there is any percentage of biofuel. Depending on how much fuel you go through you may also want to add an anti algae product. Water is used in the refining process for diesel now, so you always have a chance of having some moisture in your fuel, part of the reason I have started using fuel treatment year round.

Power Service for me also. Works fine, usually 2 tractors run through the winter. Often have some cold harvest and fall tillage weather too. Try and make sure everything gets at least a half tank of treated fuel before the season starts.

There are several good additives. The injection pump shop that used to do our pump work when we were tractor pulling told me if you start with one brand, you should stay with that brand. They recommended not changing from one additive to another.

I wouldn't purposely switch back and forth to mix them but fuel may already have additives from the pump so how do you know what you are mixing. Just run the tank really low before a fill up and switch of products

I also use PowerService exclusively. Over 40 years ago I had my tractor trailer almost die out one day. It would idle but couldn't rev at all. Another trucker stopped with a bottle of PowerService and told me to spin off the filter and dump all I could out. We filled the filter and put the rest in the tank. It fired right up and after about 10 minutes at high idle I had full power to get back on the road. I've used nothing but ever since. I had previously treated the trucks fuel with another brand treatment the day before when I got fuel, but that treatment wasn't up to the cold.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |
