After rebuilding the engine and having the head redone, it was cut flat and the whole works, I tightened Down the head in the order in the book and when I was adding coolant I was getting a pretty good leak along the entire side of the manifold, I got the rebuild kit from reliance, did I do something wrong in the rebuild or are there common issues with those gaskets? I have another head gasket that is metal instead of the composite, would this be better?

Did you coat the gasket with anything like coppercoat?

You had the head milled flat but how is the block deck and sleeve standout?

Are you sure it's the head gasket, or could it be coming out of a manifold stud?

Those gaskets (of any type) MUST be coated with something or they will leak. Some may argue about this, but after 50+ years of never ever having to redo a leaker, I think I'm right. Run a thread tap down every head bolt hole and blow out the rust/dirt. Wire brush off the head bolt threads clean and wipe some grease on the threads. Re-torque head bolt COLD after 2 to 4 hrs of run time.

I use a product called "Hylomar" sealer around the outside and around every water jacket and oil passage hole on both sides of the gasket. Copper Coat should be OK fine. Just paint it at least one good coat and then a second coat and assemble while tacky. I don't care which type of gasket. They all will work AND seep coolant if not coated with something. I might even reuse the gasket you have but I'm not there looking at it either. Wipe and air dry the block and head with brake kleen on a rag to be clean.
