The book is saying that the pinyon rod needs to be to the left of 2 piston and to the right of the other 2, I’ve never heard of this before and want to make sure I’m doing it correctly, the pin needs to be centered but the rod is offset or are they both offset?

#1 is at the radiator... #2 and #3 piston rods have the different offset ... if you put them all in the same way, the center two piston rods will drag.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

this is from the WD45 manual--- but similar ... problem is engine design with 3 main bearings and 1-2 between two bearings and 3-4 between the other two..

I installed #3 with the offset but the piston seems to have an ever so lightly larger gap on the one side than the other. Is this normal? Or is my offset not correct?

This is usually always confusing for novices. If you look closely at the pictures, on the side of each piston that the rod eye is forced up against, the piston pin (dotted lines) is flush on the outside of the piston. Tighten the pinch bolt at that point. When assembled in the engine, the rod eye is moved back slightly towards the center of the piston bringing the pin with it. If you compared all 4 pistons/rods to each other when assembled , that distance will differ some, YES. But the piston pin isn't cutting a groove into the sleeve as it goes up and down. Make it like the picture shows and you will be fine.
