Been a very long time since my last post, but here goes.

Thought I'd get my 8550 fired up for the first time in a few (too many) years. Started right up and sounds good BUT I think my shift cables are seized up from sitting. I can get it into neutral (it easily towed a few feet) but the range lever has limited movement forward and back. Similarly, the gear lever won't go into any gear (but will turn as it should).

Has anyone got experience in freeing up the cables. I'm pretty sure its frozen cables.

Secondly, is there a source for new cables out there, in the event option one doesn't work. The tractor is well worth fixing, has low hours and is in fine condition.... except for the above problem. 

Would sure appreciate any help fixing or sourcing my shift cable problem.

The range shift and park lock are done with cables. The actual gear shift has linkage and rods. The gear shift twisting part does use a cable. Probably dry and needs lube on the gear shift parts.

I'd go with Bunker Hill cables. I got replacement shift cable for our 8550 there.  Andy

Bunker Hill if you need cables. I’d spray penetrating oil everywhere I could get to first.

If you're going to try and lubricate the cables, try this. From the cab end of the cable, disconnect it and point the end "up" somehow. Remove any hardware from the end of the cable. Peel back/remove the rubber dust seal from the end. Slide a 5/16" or 3/8" gas line hose a foot long (or more) onto the cable and secure it with a hose clamp in the cable anchoring area. Now jury rig some sort of small funnel at the end of the hose pointing up and fill it with diesel fuel or penetrating oil and leave it sit for a week or more, keeping it full of fluid. There's no other way to get lube inside that cable and hopefully this will get it there.

Pretty much what the doc says. I had a range shift cable in an 8050 seize up one time. Couldn't get a new one right away. I took the old one out (much easier to do on 8050 then 8550) and and put a piece of hose on the end of it like Dr Allis is saying. Used penetrating oil in it, if I remember correctly, and put a little air pressure to the end of the hose too, to push the oil into the cable. I got the cable to start working back and forth little at a time, kept adding oil to the hose, and working it back and forth more. Pretty soon it was better then any new cable, and after putting it back into the tractor, it shifted better then it ever did. Worked that way for several years, until the tractor burned up. I think that the new cable I ordered might still be hanging on the wall. Darrel
