I am reasembling items 16,17,18,19 and sprocket (page 96 of parts book) and the sprocket will not go all the home on the spline on the shaft.  The boot/follower and two seals are too thick.  Was there a version that did not have the rubber boot/follower and then the two seals?  Is there a different parts book?  My machine is serial number 18151.   I did take parts from other machines and wonder if things changed??

No parts book handy. I have not worked on a final for the HD5. But just had guy taking parts from of my parts machines. The short drive shaft can have 1 of 2 different spline sizes.  So the sprocket needs the same spline. Other than that, I am not aware of any other differences. But I am not an expert.

Make sure the pines are in the ring seal hole and follower and the retainer bearing too

I have not been into the inner seal area but I did replace the outer seals on my Son-in-law's HD5G; there was definitely a thickness discrepancy in the outer seals so it is not surprising that there may well be differences in the inner seals.

We had the opposite problem as our seals were too thin so I had to fabricate some shims to get them to make contact at the sealing rings. A previous owner had attempted to glue things together in there with red silicone, which failed miserably and resulted in profuse leakage. Please be aware that you need to use special glue to fasten the rubber parts.

My copy of the parts manual shows a definite change in seal part numbers at tractor #22985 on pages 97 and 97a due to the change from the 6 spline shaft to the 20 spline shaft. It also appears that the sealing rings are larger diameter on the later style.

I fear that I have not been much help, all I can say is that Allis-Chalmers did indeed make changes, and when it comes to mixing and matching parts you do need to be cautious.

General Gear in Boise, Idaho has some parts available for these machines, both new and used.

Thanks for the info.  I had some other sprockets and seals and it looks like they changed things.   The inner seal against the sprocket was actually pressed in so I was trying to add too many seals.  The book talks about using contact cement.  Does anyone know what kind of cement should be used.
