The rear pivot pin on my 1959 gas D 17 wide front fell out at some point. I was backing into my shop and the rear part of the front axle fell down. I bought a new one at my local shop and it turns out that it was for the higher serial number. He was able to find one that’s going to work in his old stock trailer. The later series shoulder bolt and castle nut made sense. I’m not sure what’s supposed to hold this thing in. Does anybody have any experience with installing one of these? It seems like I probably need to take the front plate off and slide it through the axle and the back plate and then bolt the front plate back on.

There are three pieces you can hold in your hands. The bracket attaching plate (it bolts to the bell housing under the tractor with two 1/2" NC bolts) the actual pivot pin (that has two diameters with the largest diameter in the middle) and finally the wrap around strap plate (it surrounds the pivot pin and clamps it between the bracket attaching plate). The design premise wasn't really all that great in my opinion as they didn't hold up well as a loader tractor. A diesel tractor was 3 inches longer than a gas tractor. They used the same front axle between the two chassis. The wrap around strap plate went on the rear of the bracket attaching plate on a gas tractor and the front side on a diesel. The pivot pin was also flipped around the other way depending on which length the wheelbase was. Grade 8 bolts should always be used as well as lock nuts. Page 284 on the D-17 (prior to series 4) on AGCO Parts books shows all parts. There is NO WAY to use that newer shoulder bolt on that old axle, so give that idea up.
