I have a different style lever on my 175 than the 170 have. The 170's have a shift lever that is tapered and has a ball on the end made on it. I know the rubber shift knob slides on it. The 175 has a non tapered shaft lever. Does the hard ball shift knob screw onto this shaft? I want to replace the shift boot. Thanks, Tracy

My 185 has the hard plastic ball.  It needs a metal ring/wedge to grip the ball and shifter rod.  Andy

x2.  When I restored my 175, I used a pipe wrench to turn the knob back and forth until it came off.  It didn't break, but did get teeth marks in it!  When putting a new one back on, I put a piece of 2x4 under the gear shift, wrapped the knob in a rag, and tapped it on with a mallet.  I don't know if the metal wedge is still available, I reused the old one.
