I saw this CA with a bunch of weights at a nearby auction and had to outbid the scrappers for it. I am curious what everyone thinks about the serial number... It looks like CA168. There could have been more numbers past the 8, but the engine SN is CE141734GA. Comparing to my CA2957 (1951) it has engine CE145476GA. The Bs still had pretty good production volume then and were using CE engines, so given the difference between engine SNs, it seems plausible that this newest CA might actually be CA168? I need to look through the parts catalog to see if there are any parts unique to the early CAs that would help confirm.
There was also a B at the same auction... I didn't need it, but couldn't let it go for scrap. It's a 1947. The engine is for sure loose in it. Someone used a sickle mower frame to mount and drive that deck.
There is some sort of homemade rear blade from the CA that I took off prior to loading the trailer. I could tell the front part of the frame was from some AC implement, and after some research, it looks like this was originally from a CA coil shank field cultivator or rear mounted bedder. That was a nice surprise as I've been keeping an eye out for one. I think I just need to buy some square stock for the toolbar and I'll be able to use it on a pin hitch CA? I have a bunch of clamps and shanks from a bigger WD45/D17 coil shank I brought home earlier this year.
Someone sure wasn't afraid to hack on or modify stuff but I think the tractors themselves aren't in too bad of shape. These will go on the backburner until I get beans in the ground!

Looks more like 166 to me, but probably harder to see in an image. Might try some different light sources/colors (e.g. IR camera) to see if more digits show up. Maybe some very light sanding/buffing.

It does sort of look like a 6 since it was struck at an angle, but the LH side of the middle "bar" of the 8 curves up and down where it meets the vertical part on the LH side, instead of just down like the 6 does. Not sure if that makes sense.
I wire brushed and can't see anything to the right of the 8, but getting a little more aggressive might reveal something. It could possibly be 168X and the engine SNs would still line up chronologically.

CA321 was the last tractor built in 1950...

It is nice to see that I am not the only person with the thought that I have to outbid the scrappers. Not bad looking tractors, I'll bet the weights on the CA made the scrappers salivate.
Thank you for posting pictures, that underslung mower gives me an idea for my D14.

Glad you are saving them! CA looks rather interesting. Most scrappers aren't that hard to outbid.

The CA is pin hitch and so is the coil shank field cultivator frame.
The "1" also appears to be slightly taller than the other numbers. Wonder if I can find a casting date on the case... Could be a dealer replacement, but I have seen all manner of awfully-struck numbers on original factory cases.

I'm glad you saved that D14, too. I'm not sure I would do quite what they did to mount this mower, but I can see if it still works if I get the tractor running.

The tires on the CA are slightly better than the ones on the B. Yes, the scrap guy definitely bid higher on the CA with all of those weights. Those should come in handy. I'm curious if there are any foundry marks on the other side of the rears. The fronts look to be homemade - at least someone torched the cutouts for the valve stems.
I put a hand crank on the CA and its engine is loose as well. Who knows what all is wrong with them until I get them running, of course.

We have a foundry in town. They used to pay a premium for clean cast, I think it was $50/ton above scrap price. I don't know if they still do that, but it moved a lot of cast out of the surrounding area. Makes it even more important to save what is left in my mind.
Not sure if I will ever attempt to hang a mower under the D14, but just seeing that gives me the thought that I could, with some fabrication. Thank you for sharing pictures.
