We(I) have never been around raising wheat. Just curious as to what seeding wheat costs/acre compared to soybeans. Not looking for the grain aspect (not a huge market "here"),but a green plow-down/cover crop after beans this season. Thanks.

If you're just gonna plow it down, go to your local feed store, and get a price on recleaned wheat...

I haven't done wheat, but I have planted rye in the fall as a plow down. I just get bin run cleaned seed. I broadcast at about 3 bu/acre.

cereal rye but don't plow it down, cut it for hay. the roots are much better on cereal rye then wheat and leaving the roots untouched will grow your organic matter and brings earthworms back into the soil! may 20th is our time for chopping or baling. I actually perfer chopping because waiting for hay to dry in may in Nebraska can be nerve racking!

If you broadcast it , always had good luck running a disc thru , seed it and drag it down with a cedar tree,, then the birds have a tougher time finding the seeds

The method of application would be with an IH 510 drill. Was thinking the plowing down "might" be cheaper than burning down?? Thanks for the replies :)

I used some cereal rye right out of the neighbors wagon 3 years ago to seed down an old food plot. I disced the patch, sowed with my Grandpas Cyclone seeder and ran a spike tooth harrow over it. The following summer I mowed it off late August, waited 2 weeks and sprayed 24D on the weeds, and it came back as good as when I first seeded it.
Deer spend a lot of time rimming tops off the early growth clear into late November, but it still came back strong. This summer will be the 4th year since I seeded it and I still haven't killed off the Canada Thistle yet and that's why I plowed that patch up to begin with. Had it in corn , bean rotation for 4 years with roundup before going to the rye. |

I grew wheat for many years here---It was the most profitable crop I ever grew. Beans made a little money, but corn was always a loss. (inputs are too expensive for corn)

I raised wheat one year. Sold the seed for hog feed sold the square baled straw. Made money twice that year. If you got's a regular ol combine you need the take the filler bars out of the cylinder.

Freed, if your going to use it for a cover crop and run it through a drill a bushel an acre would be good, just plant it plenty early(if in the fall) to get cover and foliage, or couple bushel an acre would get more cover quicker if you get it in later. If you own a Gleaner combine just save a little for seed and cut it, it'll be clean enough to go through a drill.
Doesn't get much cheaper than good old bin run.![]() |

Not many dairy farms around here(some horse people),wondering if there's any value to the rye if it's cut ,raked and baled ?? Perhaps rye straw would be a better $$ maker? Rye is pretty new in this area so I am pretty much clueless. Thanks
