I thought that there was a difference in the engine between the WD45 and the WD.
I was looking to purchase an overhaul kit, but the kit is the same for both engines. Is this true? If so then what is the real difference between the two? Thanks Dave

The WD is a 201 cu in,originally a 4" bore and 4 " stroke. The 45 is 226cu in with 4" bore and 4.5" stroke. There are other differences in the tractor, but this is the main difference in the engine.

I believe there has to be a difference in wrist pin placement between the two different kits.

Thanks for the quick reply. Then the same kit cannot fit both engines. Would that be a reasonable assumption?

Depends on how the vendor has it listed. Yes, there is a difference. Typically though, the 45 and Wd are listed in the same section, so you need to know if you are working on the 201, or the 226. But as Charlie posted, the stroke is the basic difference.

5.0 to 1 in a WD uses the same piston as 7.2 to 1 in a WD45.

I have been blessed, my Father sold his WD45 in 1959 to a neighbor as he was in need of money to purchase an 80 acres farm.
About 3 weeks ago the son of the neighbor came to me and gave me the WD45 that belonged to his Father, who is no passed. He told me that he had no need, and he himself now has cancer, now did not plan to restore the tractor. He was certainly very gracious. The tractor however has a frozen engine, as it has been sitting for about 15-20 yrs. But I plan to overhaul the engine anyway. I would like to restore it to "new" condition. If I do I think I will have more in it than it is worth on the market, but it will be special to me. I have yet to check the serial # to determine the engine that I have. I no doubt will be asking many more questions as time goes on. Thanks again for your help with this question. Sincerely, Dave |

Sometimes even though the money end of a project can add up you also need to look at the enjoyment you can get from doing it as well.I have done tractors for farmers that brought tears to there eyes when they say them .And that is worth alot

Dave you have got the right site for help on your grandpa's WD45. And yes you can put more $$$$$ in her than it might bring at a sale, With that said you are lucky to find the tractor your grandpa had! I have three WD45s but not one of them is the old WD that Dad had and that makes the look for that WD all the more important for me to find someday. Here is the three Wd45s that seam to stay with me. lol

I looked back at my post and saw that I did not make it clear. The tractor that I now have was my Father's. He had sold it to the neighbor and his son gave it to me.
It was a blessing and so generous gift. I will be glad to put more than it was worth as I used this tractor when I was 12-13 yr old. Now I am as old as dirt. These pictures of your tractor helps me to know that they are not tooo old to be brought back to life. Thanks Dave

Go for it Dave. I have my Grandfather's Oliver 60. I've seen nice ones for sale in the + - $3K range. I spent almost $7K on it. I don't regret one penny of it. You're in the right place to find anything you will need from info to "How do I" to parts.

Dave, This is what the WD45 on the left of the above pic looked like the day it can home, The eng was not running and there was a lot of little stuff gone. You can bring Dads 45 back to life with a little work, Go for it and don't look back!

You know, If I could find the first flat top WC my father sold I would not hesitate to rebuild it. It would mean that much to me.
Go for it. The 45 has a very easy engine to restore. I am certain the parts will be a lot higher than when I sold them but it will be worth it.
It is YOUR FATHER'S TRACTOR. PRICELESS!!!
Let us know how it goes.
Good Luck!
