The tractor started right up and ran fine. I decided to take it for a short ride. I was going up a slight incline and it quit like it had run out of gas. Fired right back up but did the same thing again. Checked the fuel level with the closest universal fuel gauge and it seemed like maybe going up hill it didn't get gas.(this has been a problem before) Put five gallons of gas in it and no start. Didn't seem like it wanted to fire. 6v system, turned over very good, 6.1v at the battery, 5.3v when cranking. 5.3volts at the - side of coil with the switch on or cranking. Cleaned points, rotor and distributor cap. Checked spark with a good tester-no spark. Checked - terminal and + terminal on coil with a mulimeter. 0.0 Secondary was 8.3. Is my coil shot? Happened like right now. Sorry about the length of this post. Should the primary test around 1.5+-?

I have run them out of gas many times! I mean many times! One thing I forget to do is turn the fuel on sometimes too. Thats a easy fix.:) Check for fuel again at the carb. If it has a drain on the bottom, which it should have open that and check for fuel flow too.
Man I think back of the thousands of hours My Dad and I spent on these with so little maintenance. Good luck getting it running again. Regards, Chris |

Chris I did check the gas flow. My problem is my tactors are 2hrs away so I need to take the parts I hope I need. To hard to parts chase. I think I will get a coil and tuneup kit and take a drive. I have to add. One multimeter will go as low as 200 on the ohms and then on the primaries reads 1.5, 2000 reads 1. After that it reads 00. The other one only goes down to 2k and reads 00

The condenser I would think of second, especially if it is an old one made in the US. If it is China junk, yes it's probably bad.
But I'd think it's the coil first...... But then, thinking,,,,,,and yes, it does hurt,,,,, start checking the continuity of the various wires themselves for an open. Solid wires on these old girls have a tendency to snap and cause an open. Hope this helps.... Looks like we may not get our breakfast for quite some time now....what with our dictator governor. Hey Thad, want a governor?? |

Update. I took a new coil and a tuneup kit. Bought the parts at a farm store. Sorry but only place I could get them on my time shedule. Got some good ideas from Lon(MN). Had juice at the - side of the coil. Checked the points for spark. Had spark. Still no spark at the plug wires. At Lon's suggestion I ran a jumper from the hot wire on the starter to the - on coil. Put in new points, condenser and rotor. Fired right up. Took off jumper and hooked the wire back up to coil. Started and ran. For some reason I thought I would check the volts at the battery when it was running. Pulled out the switch to see if it would increase. The tractor shut off like I had turned the key. Opened the switch box and nothing looked bad. (new 3way switch) Unhooked the -wire on coil and hooked up jumper. Fired right up. Going to rewire it, get a voltage regulator and a push pull switch for the lights.

Update. I ordered a 6v voltage regulator from Steve(B&B). Installed the voltage regulator. Rewired the entire tractor except the lights. Will do those later as I don't use them anyway. Really cleaned up the junction box on the tractor. Everything worked as it should. Happy tractor. Thanks for all the suggestions!
