Does the 201/226 engine have valve seals? Or does the valve guide clearance control the oil in the rocker arm area?

When i rebuilt my 226, it had valve seals on it, the gasket/seal kit i used for the rebuild did not come with new seals. I did not put seals back on the guides. I do believe the sealing relies on the valve to guide clearance.  I dont believe the Agco parts books show guide seals on these motors.  Engineers may not of thought about it back then.

If your going to do redo the head per spec they are not needed but dont hurt anything. There were some problems early on with the 201 but later the rockers had oil sheds cut into them to limit the amount of oil going to the stem area.   Another problem area I have seen occurs in replacement guides is some of them have  a large chamfer cut that will funnel too much oil into the guide unless machined off flat.  The umbrella type seals will mask stem and guide problems for a while in an engine that doesnt see much use. Problem with the contact  type seals is they dont like sloppy clearances either and wont last long.
