Have rebuilt shifter ball to spec, plus a bit to allow for wear.  Thickness is to spec so that the 3 and 4 central rail will shift properly.

But ball still will apparently come out of the gate sometimes when shifting out of 2nd, and leaves the tractor in 2nd gear.  1st shifts properly, reverse shifts properly. Have tried a 2nd snap ring on top of the existing snap ring, but then the shifter is too tight to shift.

What can I do to solve the problem? Ouch

Thanks.

Reach down in with a long screwdriver and see if you can twist the 1st-2nd shaft gate side to side. If it twists too much the gap between the 2 shift gates opens up under force.

Also see if the inside of the gate notch is still flat. If it gets rounded, disassembly and filing are required.

The ball and socket wears so when you put two snap rings in shifter sets too deep. Grind some off bottom of shifter.
Does tower have one or two pins? Get over size pins and grind to fit shifter. If only one pin, machine shifter for two and drill tower.      MACK

An old mechanic I used to know gave me a variety of cup shaped spacers he machined to fit down in the tower to take up the wear so a new shift stick would work right in a worn tower. I could post pics and measurements of what he gave me. He kept a variety of sizes on hand and he gave me a handful 20 some odd years ago before he died.

The cup shaped spacer is worn in spots.  Can we still purchase the cup washers/spacers new? Will look again to see if 1st/2nd gate is worn/loose. It did look quite good yet when I had the tower off (side-front/back quite flat).  Looked the same as the reverse gate.  The tower does have 2 pins. Doesn't seem like much wear, but possibly should try to get new pins?.

Maybe should grind the bottom of the ball off some and try again with the 2 snap rings on?

Thanks for your help.
