Im going to pick up a WD i bought that runs and drives but has only had probably 6 hours use in the last few years. I think there may be a sticky valve or the like. Im thinking of just driving it home to give it a good running & heat it up. It would be about a 6 mile drive. I can easily stop if I need to address any issues that may come up on the drive home. My question is, since I'll give it a good run on the 6 mile trip, can I or should I add anything (an additive) to the oil or gas or both, to loosen up any crap that has built up? I plan on changing fluids but I wont do that until I get it home

You might try adding a quart of atf to the fuel. I had a tractor that smoked horrible and burned quite a bit of oil. It was bad enough it was fouling plugs about every 30-45 minutes. An old guy I was talking to said to dump a quart of atf in the tank. He bet me it would cure the smoking and oil burning. I doubted him but thought what the heck. I tried it and within the first hour it was barely smoking and by 2 hours wasn't fouling plugs. I put a new set of plugs in it and haven't touched them since and the tractor runs great! So... If your valve is just gummed up, this might help it. If it's a bent or burned valve, then it won't.

I would buy a can of Sea Foam. Put some in the oil and some in the fuel and drive it home.

Seafoam, 1 ounce per gallon of fuel.

On something like that I go with a full can in the crankcase and a can in the gas. It will not hurt a thing and get a higher concentrate of the sea foam on the moving parts. Change to oil after 5 or 6 hours and keep running it as per directions on the can. I just baled with a C Farmall that I bought 16 years ago that at the time smoked bad as well as fouling plugs. I have not changed plugs now in two years and the only smoke is a puff of black on start up. Never the blue white of oil. Sea Foam works if, if, if you work the tractor with it in as directed. Assuming the sticky rings or valves is the only problem.
When I started using it in the Farmall I used a half can of Sea Foam in about three gallon of gas. I still put a full can in the oil when I change to oil which is about every two years. I didn't have to add oil last year and it would still drip out the top check valve this spring. Edited by Dick L - 22 Jun 2018 at 8:21am |

I did not make it home. I had the tractor running several times but had to fight with the fuel line & sediment bowl. I couldnt get enuf fuel thru to throttle up, i had to keep cleaning out the bowl, etc. Also, there is a hydraulc hose tied up but open. The tractor ran fine several times with no leaking & has been driven that way for years. I must have pulled a lever or something & opened the valve to that hose & it gushed out. Is that a pressure relief or a closed valve I opened? To top it all off I went to start it & it popped somewhere & it wont start now. The stater or solenoid ??? Im flustered for sure. I'll admit I'm a work in progress on these old tractors. Electrical is my enemy. The old guy that had the tractor for 50 years is dead now so I'm trying to find someone with some knowledge & willingness to run over there with me. I'll update with good news I hope this week.

Check anywhere the battery cables are attached. That includes the ground wire. That would be my first guess as to what happened and the easiest to repair. It could be the starter grounded out or even locked into the ring gear.
Sounds like the gas tank needs removed and cleaned. When you find where you lost power to the starter you might want to fix a can large enough to hold enough gas to get you home and hang it some where above the carburetor rather than try to keep the crap in the tank trapped until you get home. I have used a coffee can a few times. |
