Is my WD generator working?
When I turn on my lights (2 front and one rear light I have added that is also like a headlight) the amp guage goes to -15 amps. Now after running the lights for while (20 minutes or so) when I turn the lights off and set the light switch to charge the battery, the amp guage is not showing a charge. I have a 6 V positive ground system. My generator has a cut out only on it because the fellow at Iowa Generator in Cedar Rapids said it was made for a cut out only. I use a light switch to turn on the generator to charge. The light switch is not the orginal type light switch. It is a two position switch. We have set the first out position on the light switch to allow the generator to charge and the full out on the light switch to have the lights on. Thanks for your help. Mike |

ground the field terminal out with a jumper , you should have full output from the generator . The origonal headlight switch used a resistor to vary charge from generator ,

The original switch had a resistor on it that connected the field windings to ground through the resistor for low charge and directly grounded the windings for full charge. The original switch would go to full charge when the lights were turned on and stay at full charge when pulled out for no lights.
I would do some checking to see if the field windings are getting grounded. The next thing might be to clean the inards out and maybe replace the brushes. |
