OK guys, I need some advice with this broken starter. It is the nose cone that broke. I can't see any reason for it to have broken. No teeth missing on the flywheel. Timing is good. But the real problem is what action do I take now. Steiner Tractor has the nose cone for sale. Now, when this broke, did I lose anything when I pulled the starter out? Is there any spring or bushing that goes between the nose cone and the starter drive? What would be great is if I could find an exploded view of the starter. Not sure where I could put my hands on something like that.  Thanks for the help.

There are numerous reason's why a starter nose cone could crack or break. One of the main reasons is a loose pinch bolt. The pinch bolt system on these old Tractors is the worst when it comes to mounting a starter motor. Especially when all the weight of the starter is to the rear of the unit making the pinch bolt the pivot point. Not good. Not sure who came up with that lame idea either Delco or the Tractor mfrs, but in any case, its a terrible way to mount something that wieghs more than a mortor shell. Another problem is flywheel wear or misalignment or a bad spot in the ring gear with the starter drive. Something to look at also. For guys running 12V to their starters, its not a bad idea to fab a bracket for the rear of the starter to support the wieght and keep the starter motor level and supported. There's an awful lot of wieght hanging on that pinch bolt/nose cone, and the faster 12V to those 6V starter motors really make em' twist. When I build a stout starter motor for a high compression pulling Tractor, I always mention to the customer to do that. There's a lot of torque there, and you need that torque to turn the engine, not the starter chassis or blow the nose cone off... HTH
