Was the WC seat backrest standard equipment? I suspect it was, and some farmers took it off because it was in the way (hence tractors like my '41 that don't have it). The other possibility is that it was an extra $5 or so... but I don't think that's the case.

I think they were standard because my dad got q new 42 .It was on steel and no electricy . Nothing but a crank and it had a seat  back.

It was standard equipment.  They were known to be a bit uncomfortable, especially over rough terrain.

I couldn't say one hundred percent if it was standard equipment but alot of them were removed to easily get on and off from the back end.

Thanks for confirming that, guys. I'll agree that the seat sure is stiff with or without backrest.
