My neighbor has a Ford 8240 and two alternators went bad. Is there anything in the tractor that could be causing the alternator to to stop charging? I think it is taking out the voltage regulator inside the alternator. Checked the batteries and they are good.
Thanks, Nella

Without seeing it in person, my 'hunch' is that there's an intermittent dead short.
Could be in the wiring harness( mice are famous for chewing on wires), maybe a wire is grounding out due to rubbing on steel, could be the ammeter grounding out( fibre insulators are gone), bad battery(though you say good..does it work in something else?) What usually takes out VRs is very high current 'spikes'( short term < 1 second).Something human eyeballs can't see on meters but solidstate device do! Jay |
