I recently bought an Allis Chalmers 190XT and I'm planning to build it into a tractor pulling tractor.

I'd like to increase the horsepower without replacing any major parts if possible. What adjustments or modifications would you recommend?

I'm mainly looking for things like injection pump adjustments, timing, governor settings, fuel delivery, or any other tricks that can safely make more power before I start changing parts.

Any advice or experience with these tractors would be greatly appreciated!

Advice?

Unless you are going to strip it down to a 7000lb. class, get a different tractor with a big block. The 301 is a great engine in the light classes, but in the heavier classes, it's tough enough to compete with a 426 against the higher cubic inch red and green tractors.

Yes, I'm going to reduce its weight as much as possible so I can compete in the lighter weight classes.

How much horsepower can I realistically gain while keeping the original injection pump?

  We are going to find out how much HP at the Orange Spectacular soon.
 
  On my brothers 200 we put in 7080 injectors and turned up the Roosa internally, removing air filter and end cap was worth 6 HP stock.

Never Green, you should hit 150 HP? don't you think ??  And then add one of my alcohol injector kits and that is 50 HP more in a 301.

To the poster: I can fondly remember the County Fair tractor pull of 1977. The local Farmall dealer had a young whiz-bang Tech that was going to show us (local AC dealer) how to pull farm stock tractors. He didn't get too crazy, but he had the best possible tractor to work with (1466 no cab) and completely blew it !!!  He installed a larger set of injector tips (good move)  and turned the fuel screw all the way (a second good move) on the AmBach M-100 injection pump. PTO Dyno test had him at 300 HP+ just a little. His turn to pull came up and he stuck her in HIGH 2nd (good choice) and at about the 220 ft mark the rear wheels slowed down and stalled !!!  So the moral of the sad (funny) story is you have to have a clutch and TA capable of handling what the engine is producing after the HP increase. One of my customer's tractor was the winner with LESS HP.

Yeah Doc. We also had lots of fun back then - had a 185 with 903 tips, found a 220 pump and drive shaft with pusher pump. Wish I had thought/known about the water/alcohol injection back then. We could hold 6th gear in the 7, & 9000 class with 23.1-26 tires.   On an old XT lots of detail work - tank to be cleaned (or bypased) - new fuel lines to the fuel filter - check power director and clutch to see what HP they will hold. PD clutch will hold all hp if good - stock foot clutch is only good to about 150-180 HP we found. Drawbar heights and lengths are very inportant - using a clevis can drip the hitch point 4 inches - and then there is tire pressure. Timing of a couple degrees advanced would be safe. It was mention gaining a little HP - it takes several HP to pull an alternator and water pump - several used electric WP drive.  We couldn't run 7th so unless changing gears were were at a plateau  back then anyway.  When one goes above 200 on the 301 there are a lot of stuff that needs changed/beefed up/improved - rods, cam etc... of course nowadays there are usually 100 pages of rules...

You should get that 190 down enough to get into a 6500 class, I've seen that done. Maybe even lighter. You can go twice a fast with half the HP in a tractor that is half the weight. I had as much fun with my 100 HP turbocharged CA at 2500 pound as I did with the twin engine modified with blowers and injectors on both engines ant I ran back in the 80s in the 5000-12000 classes.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.

   158 HP, you were damn close Dr., funny, pulling the air cleaner had no affect this time.
