Went to start my 180 to drag out and finish as laid fresh rock on drive, Failed. Hammers into Flywheel HARD, Ammeter buries Hard Over and no rotation, Reached in rotated engine by hand at Fan, NOT locked up, was no indications when last parked as a problem. Going to pull it off today and see if can rotate starter by hand. May have a failed Field winding and a Magnetically Locked Armature.
Not very happy with the heat here but at least is inside the Shop not down at barn. Had moved it for Vacation Trip only three+ weeks ago started just fine.

I have encountered a different problem so i understand your frustration
All the 426 engines ive had have had nippendenso starters. I thought they were great starters. Ive had two tractors i acquired with some fuel system problems In trying to get them started and ehe engine didnt start on that attempt the starter wouldnt stop. Then its scramble to get the batterys unhooked so it doesnt set the thing in fire Unexplainable |

Been out in the shop and tried Direct bypass of Start Circuit with a Remote Button Switch, Starts Fine, started Digging, FREAKING Rodents. Found some wiring chewed, working at that, then noted terminals loose on Clutch Switch, that has been ordered, possibly Low Volting Start Side pull in.
