First off, thank you guys for helping with the brakes. SO, I replaced the seat(there wasn't one) and went to use the forklift.....it stopped stearing. I lifted up on the steering wheel and the shaft slid right up the tube. The PS assembly looked buried, so I propped up the cage and was able to remove the shaft to see if anything was broken and this is what I got... I purchased both the repair manuals and the parts manuals but, since I'm and idiot, I can't really figure out the clamping method that is being used and it's really difficult to see or get access in there without starting to take more things apart. Any and all help or advice is appreciated.....

I am having a hard time seeing it all also... but it appears ITEM #4 is a gear that sets inside the case with a bearing on each end.. That would be stationary... Is that the RED arrow below ? ... or is the RED #17 ?? ... DID you pull the gear out of the gear box ? Both bearings are GONE ?
The blue arrow looks like a PIN that holds the steering column into the gear shaft ? Pull the PIN and the GEAR comes off ?? what does the book say #17 and #18 are ?? Hard to tell in the drawing. Edited by steve(ill) - 12 Oct 2023 at 4:19pm |

That is a wire, I assume for the horn... 17 and 18 are the column and shaft...If I'm reading it correctly...

is this the gear from inside the gear box... #4... or somewhere up above on the shaft ? (#17 ?) Looks like it could have bearing support on the end, but not much of a gear ?? Is there a shaft still sticking out of the gear box ?

your does not look exactly like the drawing................. OK, i think what they are showing is #17 is the LONG SHAFT..... #18 is the TUBE (column) around the shaft and #19 is just the CLAMP..... I thought that it was a 2 part shaft 17-18) at first.... So is #4 the gear on the end of the shaft you pulled out ? Or still inside the gear box ?
I guess the big question is how does #17 connect to #4 (gear)... they dont show a PIN or BOLT so it might be a hex or spline or ?? I think the end of the shaft needs cleaned up / wire brushed to see if there is a better indication . Edited by steve(ill) - 12 Oct 2023 at 6:36pm |

I honestly have no idea... I was hoping I wouldn't have to start breaking down the entire assembly to figure it out..

I think your going to have to look down the column ( tube) and see if that gear shaft is still inside the gear box... Im afraid that it is on the end of the shaft and the bearings and gears are all worn out... Maybe a dowel or broom handle stuck down the tube and measure the depth to see if it goes all the way into the gearbox...
In the end, it dont make a whole lot of difference.. I think the box will have to be removed or good access to rebuild..... Allis normally did not BUILD the steering boxes for tractors.. They BOUGHT them from others. You may be able to buy parts or a replacement box... Not necessarily for a fork truck.. It could be the same or very similar to a 1950 JEEP.. etc. Maybe a name on the gearbox.

??? doesnt it look just like the PARTS BOOK drawing above ?
my point was it looks VERY SILMILAR to a GEEMER design, and may be able to get parts from an old CAR/ JEEP that uses a similar box... It was not specific to ALLIS. Edited by steve(ill) - 15 Oct 2023 at 9:08pm |

No...lol... I'll look into Geemer. The guy who had it before said it slipped out years ago and he was able to get it back in...said it was a PITA.. Wish he would have mentioned that....

Fish- if yours is a power steering system, it's probably hydraulic... with a hydraulic steering valve in the bottom of the column, four hoses going to it... two are to a steering cylinder somewhere, and of the other two, one gets pressure from the pump, and other returns to tank. If that's the case, then your steering shaft's end is probably splined, and worn out. If so, You MIGHT be able to drop the steering valve (without disconnecting hoses) flip it upside down, hose out the hole with some carb cleaner, clean out the crud parts, mebbie there's a broken-off splined end there you can magnet out...
If that's all the case, take the shaft apart, get a new piece of splined stock, make up a new end that'll fit into the tube, rosette weld it in place. There was PROBABLY a thin clip land cut in it at one time to accept a circlip of some flavor, that you'd drop the steering shaft into the tube, the lower flange would clear that circlip groove (so install the clip, now the wheel can't lift out), then reinstall the hydraulic steering valve onto the flange (align the splines) and bolt it down, and Bob's Your Oyster... But if it's a Gemmer, or a Ross, or some other flavor of steering box, you're gonna need a donor of some type... match the action and geometry as best you can... or get a steering valve and a ram, and some hoses...

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

this is the shaft..... the hollow column is still there. I suppose I'll have to dive more into it when I get a chance... It steered perfectly fine until this happened... I mean, it's OBVIOUSLY been worked on before...

OK, so after looking at this closely, it IS splined. Furthmermore the splines are pretty beat up AND...I still can't get it back to slide in... I've reached out to many repair places, and may have some luck with Arnold's, but I'm still stuck....
