Just hand picking enough to plant next year. How many people even know what that means ???? Except the Fellas on here.

Do you use a husking peg? Probably some don't know what that is, even some on here! Pic #2 looks like you do...Harvey

A member of our historical society brought this one to display at out meeting last fall.
It belonged to his grandfather and is in very good condition although it has obviously seen some use.

Husking peg !!!! wow ! we haven't used one as of yet but our hands aren't bloody yet .  But on that subject I do remember a few husking tools being used by my Grandfather. I am sure they are still here on the farm somewhere. Ours looked like a large file handle with a steel hook coming out of it.

well, now I've seen a husking peg, how does it work? I'm not from "corn" country, so I have no idea how this would work. well, I can't say totally not from corn country, there is a lot grown here, but that is all combine harvested, or silaged.

I've never used one but I think:
One finger thru the strap with point toward you. Insert in silk end of corn and pull.

Okay, here's the test. There are variations of the pegs-go to Google. The one I'm thinking of was a metal hook fastened to a wide leather strap that fit in the palm of your hand & strapped around your wrist. Now, who remembers the gloves with 2 thumbs? When you wore out the palm, you simply flipped them over for double the wear. I think you may have had to switch to the other hand. They were heavy, may have been woolen or cotton. My Dad used them rarely when picking downed corn the picker missed.

We had the metal and leather ones. Green suede leather and galvanized steel. Probably made in the late 30s.
Looks like you are growing heirloom corn. Be sure to look up the YouTube videos on Landraces (joeseph landgraf).
I previously grew Reids Yellow Dent but found higher protein percentages in the blue and red varieties like Jimmy Red and Blue Hopi so I located as many dark kernel seed as possible to plant this year. Waiting on harvest to see if success.

In the one in the pic, you stick a finger through the leather loop, with the point parallel to your thumb. insert the point, to separate the shuck form the ear, slide down to the bottom of the ear, and snap the shuck off...
