Hello,

We have a fully resorted '56 WD45 that is all of a sudden having issues. It's a complete frame disassemble/motor/paint etc. restore. It was done about 2 years ago and sat for a year in our garage with no use. I'm assuming the carb is gunked up but here's what happens. It'll run fine for 5-10 minutes, but then will turn off on itself and stutter if you're driving it with no power in upper gears. 1st gear seems to work OK. When we first picked it up it ran flawlessly, but after sitting the winter is when the issue seemed to develop. 

Best way to clean the carb? I'm very versed in small 2 stroke carb cleaning, but not this. I did notice the fuel bowl seemed to have a lot of sediment that got stirred up when i turned the gas on. I'm assuming this was from the inside of the tank.

the carburetor is very vary basic. Easy to overhaul.. Small jets need removed ( if possible) and blow out.... has a float and gas  valve shut off for level control. If it was dont 2 years ago , you might be able to save the original gasket and reuse...

Remove jets, blow thru the carb holes, blow out the jets and reinstall.. Some type of inline filter is a good idea.. The glass bowl keeps out the CHUNKS. One chunk make be floating around in the bowl and plugging main jet on occasion.

Start with fuel flow from the tank !!! Disconnect the gas line at the carb and check flow into a gallon jug. It better fill that gallon jug in less than 10 minutes or there is a fuel supply problem..

No need for an inline filter.  Get the tank cleaned out and lined if it has lots of rust particles inside it.  Clean out the sediment bowl (install a new screen) and clean out the carb.  Fill with fresh gas and you are good to go.

Sounds like the tractor was repainted, but not restored.

What I used to do  to stop the oldtime scale and rust from the bottom of the tank getting into the sediment bowl, is to unscrew the shutoff from the tank and put a 1 inch piece of copper tubing in the shutoff. After screwing this back in the tank, the inlet to the bowl will now be 1 inch from the bottom of the tank. Saves fighting to clean the tank.

I put an inline filter and changed out every 4 months for a year... Then remove and put the original line back on........... That was after cleaning out the tank as best as i could... did not seal inside.

Had to edit it to fit the upload but here it is. We actually had the engine warrantied if you can believe that. Complete frame off, every part is new remanufactured.

Yea, you got to get down to something like  1 MB to get it to load... But you need to shrink to about 800 x 600 pixels to fit the page... you can do that on your computer in PaintBrush, or you can sometimes shrink a little by using this forum upload program.

Beautiful tractor. So I have a question since pictures from that era are black and white. What year and model were the rims painted silver?

None were painted silver they were bare galvanized.

Here’s another! Been a great tractor for us. We really only use it to put our boat in since our shore is shallow. But since we’ve had it redone we usually just park it on shore

That is a awesome job on the WD45 wide front! I love it. Warranty on the engine? Wow would not have expected that! Must be a darn good shop! Maybe more details on that as someone may want to use them too??

A set of original lights would really look nice on your tractor too. (That is just my opinion) Its yours and I know how this is, because I do some things to mine that are not like they were when new. And I do upgrades also. Like the GM alternator. I want them to work and start. 
(At least you kept your rim colors correct, unlike some other guys that in know!! ;))

Nice lookin' Tractor. Looks like it was done right! If there was any Ethenol in your gasoline, it probably gummed up the Carb over the Winter time while it sat. Ethenol is good for that. Nice paint job to!  Good luck with it!

Here are a few old pictures. I'd have to dig pretty deep to get more with better detail. It wasn't in terrible shape when we got it. But it's definitely a completely different tractor now. As I mentioned, we actually had the motor warrantied by AGCO which was astonishing to us. 


As for original lights, does anyone have a link they could share that shows them? Tires are in GREAT shape as well. Fronts are new, but rears are original. I don't really have much of a backstory. We bought this years ago from a farmer and it sat outside. One day we decided it needed a revamping and this is where we ended up. Took about a year.

I also pulled out and cleaned what I think was the idle screw. It was on the top of the carb and had a small spring on it. Somehow it was filthy even though the carb was new/remanufactured. The tractor stays in a garage year round so that confused me.

Rosewood Tractors was a HUGE help in all of this. I can't thank them enough.

Should be able to find a good restore-able set of original Guide brand lights for a WD series tractor. Put good 12 volt bulbs in there. Should be good to go!
