 Topic: front feed chain, N6 Gleaner

The front feed chain in my N6 sort of fell into a state of dis-repair. I was looking for part numbers for it on agcopartsbooks.com, and got a little confused. First listing is for a complete assembly, and is listed as being A557 chain. Then below that, is listings for side chains and center chain in both A557 and CA550. What's up with the two different chain numbers..? Anyone know? Thanks, darrel

Center chain will have tabs on both sides, side chain will only have tabs on one side. Otherwise probably the exact same chain types and dimensions.

I'd get the 557 complete assembly, slats and all. The 550 chain was the early lighter style and you could buy the separate chains lengths without the slates. Slates? I mean slates. What's the matter with me, I mean slats!

CA550 chain was adequate for those older combines for the most part. When you go to CA557 chain, you are adding a lot of extra WEIGHT because the chain weighs more. This over time can break the drive shafts and anything related to the feeding system. That's why over the years the hex shafts and drum bearings, etc have been made beefier....to handle that extra chain weight and pressure from operators driving faster.

Boy Doc, Gleaner must of let the bean counters affect the build quite a bit. I wouldn't have guessed that the weight difference between the chains would make much difference. Of course then I think of how light the CaseIH rotaries were in the feeder house so............

I never had any issues with CA550 chain in an N-series BUT, I didn't have any corn heads larger than 6 rows either. All my N-6's and many N-5's would run full tilt in second gear all day long in corn. The biggest downside to the CA550 chain to me was the 3/8" bolts holding the slats. The change to CA557 chain went to 1/2" bolts which was probably a good thing. My Brothers R50 still has the old CA550 chain with a 6-30 head and we never have had any chain issues in a dozen years or more of harvesting.
