Anyone pull a round baler with a gas 170? I have 2 Oliver 1550 tractors gas and diesel
I pull a NH 851 baler with OK and they are 53 PTO HP and I'm thinking about a gas 170
that's rated at 54 PTO HP but wondering if the gas 4 cylinder has the power to get the job done?

53 or 54 HP from a 4 cylinder should be the same as from a 6 cylinder.  Torque X RPM makes HP.

Guess you're right but the reason I wanted someone to chime in that's run a 170 on a baler is I have a 4 cylinder International about the same HP and governor stays wide open once the baler starts to make a bale and its just too much for the IH to pull.

I have pulled an 851 with my 175D in the past and it is a load. Up hill with a full bale is all it wants. I don’t remember what the hp is on it. I think around 65. If you have a bigger horse I think you would be better off using it.

The torque curve is probably flatter on a diesel.

I would look towards a 180-185 with hydrulic engagement on the PTO-- since you have not bought anything yet. Just my thoughts

I have a 180 and a 185 but wanted to know if the 170 would be capable to use on the balers if needed.
