 Topic: resistor location on coil?

Well, I went and done it..changed over to 12 volt.. got tired of replacing 6V batteries, I had a 12 V. genny but found out it was shot. Went to a delco alt. also changed to negative ground. The question I have here is the coil calls for a resistor..do you hook it up before or after the coil ?

Electrically it doesn't really matter. It's parts of a series circuit.+12volts to switch to coil to resistor to points to ground is the same as +12 volts to switch to resistor to coil to points to ground. Physically it's easier and neater to wire it between the switch and the coil + wire. Electrons don't care...

Just put a 3 ome coil on it ,then you need NO resistor

The ballast resistor is sensitive to the elements. Install it in a place that protects it from the elements (inside the tool box?). When I convert a CA to 12 volt, I use a 12 volt Gennie (for the original look) and mount the VR inside the tool box to protect it from the elements and to maintain the original look. I also purchase a 12 volt internally resisted coil (not too expensive from your local auto parts store) instead of re-using the 6 volt coil and the ballast resistor for reliability reasons.

Go to Farm and Fleet and buy a new 12 volt coil and forget about the resistor.

thanks guys, I do have a 12V genny but it was no good so I borrowed the Alt. from my Monti that I am restoring. I already had the coil and the paperwork said that I needed the resistor. Thanks again Jhon
